Like, say you've got a rook on the same file as the opposing king, but one of your knights is between the two. You can move the knight, causing a check from the rook and letting you move your knight again while he is busy dealing with the check. So you can basically pick off any piece your knight can get to in two moves.
I'm not saying it's the end all be-all, but if you get a guy being over aggressive, it's a nice way to get his queen/basically win the game. Even if he goes d5, you will still win a pawn and ultimately get superior position.

so i'm black here... it's his move right now so i'm sure he's going to move his queen out of danger, but what should my strategy be here? try and get my closest pawn promoted? or advance either the G or H pawn to try and force checkmate? halp
I would try and get one of your pawns promoted, but it will be tough.
It's kinda funny how getting a person's queen early is obviously great, but you usually spend a lot of tempo doing it, and then you've got to play some pretty furious defense for a while after.
