Do it Bucky!!! Save the environment and school 99% of the cars off the line. And within a year level 4 autonomous. The hardware is well above the curve and with automatic software updates, in addition to a non combustion engine, it should give you 500k easy. It's the future. At least explain that to your wife.

And wait for another 5-7 years. I seriously love Elon musk, but he has zero chance of being able to mass produce the 3 on the scale he wanted. I think with the announcement of the truck and roadster, Tesla will be a high end, cutting edge niche company than a major manufacturer in the automobile industry. If you have stock in Tesla, get out. :(

Regardless, what he has done to push clean energy and technology is truly amazing. History will remember him well.

Hmmm...epiphany moment!!

I used to roll my eyes about Tesla's "ludicrous mode" and their quest to make their cars REALLY REALLY FAST. I mean, the technology is about going to a sustainable energy source, not about drag racing. It actually turned me off on the company a little bit.

BUT...now it just hit me how brilliant it is. Just think...Tesla could've made a great electric car without the speed and captured only the "Green" portion of the car market but been largely ignored by everyone else. But by going ludicrous he also captures a portion of the fast car enthusiasts, thus expanding the electric car market non-organically. So car guys as well as granola-crunching tree huggers will be on the tesla bandwagon.

Nicely done, Elon.

The big knock on electric cars by dumb-dumbs was that they couldn't accelerate or go fast enough. Elon took care of that.

The KOD for combustion engine cars will be the 1000 mile battery with a half hour recharge. Jmho.

As someone who takes long car trips fairly regularly, this would definitely work for me--650 miles in a day is a lot driving. I suppose there may be a few hard core types who think nothing of 15 hours straight driving, but at 70 mph, that's only 1050 miles. Even then, if you really can get a 30 minute recharge, that's a pretty quick lunch and a pee.

there's an old gas station for sale in my 'hood. Wondering if I should buy it and turn it into a public charging station with a little coffee/snack area. Wonder if I could turn a profit.

Who knows if and when technology like this comes to fruition. I believe if the right people keep working on it, we might see it in a decade. As for the gas station, nothing like looking toward the future. Just make sure the tanks have been pulled and there is no problem with EPA.

I can't imagine it would take much to turn it into a charging station, but I'd think to make it profitable you'd have to be there to run it yourself.

i love the repurposing of old gas stations with service bays.

the battery capacity and overall range of EV's has been increasing so dramatically. tesla is of course leading the way, but even the other manufacturers are going to be getting 200+ miles with their newest models and pretty soon they'll be around 300 very, very soon. what this means is that you can probably charge it once a week overnight from home with pretty much a standard outlet, slightly upgraded of course and get through the week.

i think the major players in charging game you would be competing with are going to be shopping centers that need to attract people from online and interstate charging stations like pilot and flying j.

now if you make great coffee and snacks AND offer charging services that would work.

A great idea is having a van/truck that could offer emergency roadside quick charging.

IIRC, a few months ago I saw an article about charging with a certain EV. They used twin 220v lines at their home and cut down the charging time to 8 hours with this particular EV. Charging time is decreasing as we speak.

Right now with the Model S you can get a full charge on a 240v 90A circuit (something you can install at home) in under 6 hours for 300 miles of range. Or a tesla supercharger can give you 170 miles in 30 minutes (1:15 to get the full 300 miles).

WOW! OPEC and Russia have extended their crude oil output cuts to the end of 2018. I wonder how long it's going to take for them to eat their oil?

If you build it, they will come.

Problem with building a public charging station is that there are several competing fast charging standards.
