VLC isn't pretty, but I wouldn't call it intimidating

Intimidating for a five-year-old maybe?

This player supposedly plays protected blu-rays (I downloaded it awhile ago but forgot to install it). The Media Player codec pack has a ton of audio and video codecs but IIRC, doesn't handle protected blu-rays.

Ripping BD's to mkv's is easy with makemkv. There's no loss of quality and you can choose which titles (so you can save space and just rip the main title, if you want). They then can be played with various media players, e.g., a WDTV Live or Roku (with Plex) (but an AppleTV must be jailbroken) or in Windows with Arcsoft's TotalMediaTheatre (which is the best software player, IMO). If you want to rip for software playback, you can also use Slysoft's AnyDVD HD. And if you're looking to rip your BD's to mp4/m4v files, of course Handbrake is your best bet.

I may want to do all of those things, but also to just play a Blu Ray disk straight up. Occasionally we still get them from NetFlix when that particular movie isn't available streaming.

This isn't available yet, but if it works well it'll be amazing.

http://mashable.com/2014/05/06/modulo-portable-charger

Low battery, you may have met your match.

A new portable charging system aims to put on-the-go power in your pocket, boasting a set-up that reportedly doesn't compromise on power or portability. Modulo, developed by Barcelona-based tech company Idapt, is a credit card-sized gadget that claims to power any USB device, wherever you go.

"All our lifestyle now goes to electronics — it's portable, really portable," Idapt CEO Jacques Giribet told Mashable. "We have designed a battery that is as small as possible, taking into account that we want it to give you the same power as the original battery."

Once an electronic device is connected to a Modulo, either with its original charger or one of Idapt's mini cables, the battery begins to power up. The two can be even more securely attached with special adhesive strips that don't leave any residue behind. Stacking multiple Modulos on top of one another means more juice for a faster charge. For example, one Modulo would be enough to power up a smartphone as quickly as a normal charger would, but a tablet would need two or three to reach a full charge in the fastest possible time, the company claims.

The Modulos themselves can be charged from any wall socket, while connected to a computer or with a wireless receiver. Idapt also hopes it will be able to offer a solar-charging panel and crank add-on that creates its own energy. A Modulo can last up to about six months on one charge, according to the company.

There are plenty of other on-the-go charging options out there. According to Giribet, what sets Modulo apart from the rest of the pack is the fact that it's compatible with so many devices, and users don't have to choose between true portability — each Modulo weighs 2.4 ounces — and function.

"None of the solutions that are there are really a solution," Giribet said.

Modulo's Kickstarter campaign has already surpassed its fundraising goal, attracting more than $60,000 out of its original $30,000 goal, with 24 days remaining. It also won iLounge's Best in Show award at CES 2014. Production is expected to begin June, and shipping will start in July.

i bought one of these the other week and it finally got here this week. its pretty fucking awesome.

http://www.theairdock.com/

Its a car mount for my cell phone. I purchased the CD Player mount. slides into the cd player and then the crescent disc expands to hold itself in place. its very very sturdy. went over a lot of pot holes yesterday and the mount was only slightly vibrating. The phone mount portion is a micro suction cup and also has 2 magnets in it. My phone(nexus 5) has two magnets in it that work very well with the mount. Other phones i've been told stick to the surface very well. Its a wireless QI charger as well. so i just hop in the car and put the phone on the mount. no sliding in and out. easy to arrange from portrait to landscape. comes with a USB car charger that has two USB plugs(a 2amp and a 1amp). The phone showed no signs of slipping or move when attached to the mount. the magnet and suction surface works perfectly.

its kinda pricy but the convenience to me is worth it.

what do you guys think of the new "coolest" cooler everyone is raving about

they're over $5M on their $50K goal

it's a cooler with an 18v battery, blender, bluetooth speaker, USB charging ports, interior LED lighting, two interior compartments, bottle opener, wheels & handle (and bungee tie points), plastic plates and utensils

$185 to order one from the kickstarter

too much can go wrong for my liking. Trying to find out if the battery is replaceable, else you'll have a "cooler" in 3 years

bluetooth, blender- meh. they'll be unusable in a couple years.

I like the LED lighting and the bungee strap

plates and utensils (custom sized to fit the compartments) will be lost in due time also

Seems like all that extra gadgetry would either make the cooler larger externally or smaller internally. Or reduce the effectiveness of the insulation.
