Forgot to mention earlier in the week... I picked up a Nexus 7 32GB for $229 through Buydig this weekend. It shipped today (or yesterday? who can tell with FedEx's shitty tracking system). Hope to have it by the weekend, but who knows.

Yeah, I went back and forth for a bit. I was reluctant to go for the N10 b/c the 32GB model was just too expensive, and I definitely don't want to be limited to a 16GB tablet with no SD slot. Yes, I can use a dongle and a flash drive with the right app setup, but that's not always convenient or practical.

Plus, I really like the portability of the N7. Slips into a coat pocket, can be much more easily held with one hand (or by toddler hands). I won't be using it with a keyboard docking station--I'd rather just use my laptop for extensive typing. Besides, most of that type of stuff would be for work purposes and I have a work laptop plus we'll be getting 4G iPads shortly. For me, it's really just a media and surfing device.

It took three days to get from the shipper to the FedEx facility in NJ. Unreal.

The good news is it arrived at my delivery facility today. The bad news is that there's only a 50/50 chance it makes it on a truck today. The even worse news is there's a good chance that when they do finally come to my door and no one answers b/c we're at work (duh), they'll leave a slip saying I have to drive to Ashland (an hour away) or schedule a delivery time during regular hours where someone will be there to sign for it.

I seriously hate FedEx.

What bugs you about it?

I was very happy to learn that my N7 arrived yesterday morning with no signature required. I sent my mom over to get it off the front step of our house--luckily I did b/c the FedEx genius didn't put it in a bag even though it had poured all night and rain was forecast yesterday.

Got to play with it for about an hour last night. Part of that was the software updates to upgrade to Jelly Bean. Definitely like it so far--very smooth performance. I'm not sure how I feel about JB vs. ICS at this point. Seems more or less the same to me except with two drop-down shades instead of one, which is kinda annoying. The multiple user aspect will definitely be nice though, at least once I figure out how to do it.

The screen isn't as sensitive as I would like it. Finding myself pressing the same thing several times a acting for it to register. The size of the phone is a little quirky still. I guess i'll get used to it in time. Think I'm going to have to get a rubber bumper or something so I don't drop it while one banding the phone. Since its all glass its very slippery.

I can't remember what else bugged me. But so far I'm loving it. Very fast and responsive.

I'm going to get my wife a tablet for Christmas. Anyone have any experience with the kindle fire? I'm either getting her that, an iPad or an iPad mini.

Unless you're an Amazon Prime subscriber, go with the iPad over the Fire. Even if you're an Android user, you'd have have to repurchase nearly all of your apps anyway b/c Amazon locks you out of the Google Play marketplace (for obvious reasons). One of my coworkers got the Fire HD shortly after it came out. He likes it, but hates being stuck with the Amazon infrastructure. I've played with it before and chose the Nexus 7 b/c I didn't like it very much. It seems like more of a "hey this is a great tablet for the non-tech-savvy parents and their youngish kids to share" type thing. The only real upside IMO is the HDMI port but that really isn't a big deal unless I'm traveling b/c I can stream Amazon video to my blu-ray player.

I chose a 7" tablet partly due to portability reasons and partly b/c I really wanted a Nexus device (but the 10" starts at $399). If price isn't an issue you might as well get the full-sized iPad and skip the Mini. Hell, the iPad 2 is downright affordable at this point and there's not much of a difference between the two devices for non-iSnobs.

I have both an iPad 2 and a Mini. Love them both. Other than size, the biggest difference is my Mini has LTE, which my 2 doesn't (although the newer iPads do, of course). If cellular data is important to you, LTE is fabulous. If not, it all comes down to size. Have to say I love how light the Mini is and being able to stick it in a coatocket. Also, thumb typing is much easier.
