It’s the siren song of electoral math: turn out one of your supporters who tends not to turn out, you gain a vote. Convert one of the other guy’s voters, it’s a net gain of two votes.

Yes, I ignored that. You are right. And that is clearly part of the plan. However, I still contend having a MAGA Hat Wearer as part of the DNC convention is bonkers. They had regular Trump voters. I think they played the same dude from Rhode Island every night. There was that WW2 Vet and then obviously all the R politicians. They did it a lot!

If Trump supporters = Trump's base there's very little good that can come from it.

I can see potential value in selected town hall type questions from people voting for the Republican candidate, not Trump.

Would like to point out too that Biden's speech was about 25 minutes. HRC spoke for nearly an hour. Both of Obama's were up there too, around 40ish. So for the "these speeches are too long" crowd, they cut them down a TON.

Speeches are shorter because there is no audience, I think. It doesn't account for all of the time difference but there are no applause pauses.

What The Dude is describing sounds like a town hall style debate where people R and D can ask questions of the candidates. I think they'll probably have them (virtually) as they have done in the past but I don't think that the convention is the proper place.

Plus, we cannot forget the electoral math of 2016. Take your base for granted, lose the Electoral College by less than 80k votes.

They're doing an honest job of trying to convert dissatisfied non-base 2016 Trump voters, but any more and we risk falling into a 2016 trap again. Motivate and mobilize the Obama non-voters and get the Lincoln Project republicans and it is a romp.

That's valuable, but that's not what conventions are for. Conventions are very much (at least since 1968) scripted "rally the troops" events.

The town hall stuff can happen later in the campaign.

Wait, what... Tom Hanks and Chrissy Tiegan are pedophiles who practice cannibalism upon these children? That is what Q is selling? Apparently not new news, but what? People believe this? Like actual, IRL humans. I am so confused by how that even happens.

That's the real reason Hanks was in Australia when he caught The COVID. Easy access to Papua New Guinea for the consumption of human flesh.

I guess there were two schools of thought here - you bring some Republicans on and try to show that they're Biden supporters, or you ignore them altogether and keep it 100% Dem all the time. I guess they found the right balance, because to me it was a pretty well put together convention all things considered. I am not sure I understand trying to "speak to Trump supporters" and show that or do that through speeches, because as Cal said that seems like a bit of a waste.

Probably anecdotal as well but I had C-SPAN on after the speech and they were doing the call-ins. Three Republicans called in during the time I had it on, all had nothing but nice things to say, but two said they're supporting Trump and the other lady just said she had to do more research. They all agreed it was a good speech, but they're still Trump supporters. So you can't spend too much time pandering to these people, because many are beyond reproach and even the good eggs are still pushing the lever for Donald. There were a few Ds who did call in and say they were more excited than they had been previously, so it seems like the speech and convention on the whole did its job from what I'm hearing and reading so far.

So same game, different channel - how much time does the DNC need to spend on converting its core? Trump is a master fluffer for his base. Is that a great use of hours of programming or should the DNC focus on people talking about shifting to Biden? The truth is that there was too much programming aro0und just about everything. I think most things could have taken a 20% haircut and it would have been better. Biden was about right and we needed more Calamari, but otherwise it could ave been filled with more substance and different content, or just made bite sized for our ADHD world.

I thought this was a good take from TPM. It gets to some of these points, but instead of saying Trump voters, it talks about the focus of the convention. For the record, I've watched the highlight videos that interested me, but haven't watched the whole convention or even a big portion of it.

Donald J. Trump
@realDonaldTrump
96% Approval Rating in the Republican Party. 51% Approval Rating overall in the Rasmussen Poll. Thank you!

Disconnected from reality with Rasmussen, but I have never been able to get my head around that ninety something % rating. There have been calls from news organization s that this number is fiction and without basis, but it is almost always left there. Maybe they are not letting Trump live rent free in their column inches, but it would be nice to have something more plausible that a polite GTFO walk away.

WaPo has done the best with this, but because of shit graphics you need to guess where the 'strongly approve' is, which is about 65%, then add in the rest and it is still somewhere in the low 80's. That seem s far far too high. Republicans are largely not idiot and polls are not conducted strictly the head trauma unit, so I continue to be befuddled, not by the lie, but by the data.

@realDonaldTrump
To get into the Democrat National Convention, you must have an ID card with a picture...Yet the Democrats refuse to do this when it come to your very important VOTE! Gee, I wonder WHY???
