I want a dog. My wife doesn’t want a dog. We don’t have a dog.

That. Seems like too many cats.
Fine. You wanna act like you're two? I'll act like I'm one.

We have 3 cats, and it’s too many cats, but I also really like all 3 cats and I’m really glad I have all 3.

Cats are awesome pets. Perhaps we've been fortunate over the years, but of the seven cats we've had, none have been the kind that knock stuff off of shelves and such just because. None have been dicks who scratch you for no reason, and all have been affectionate (on their own terms, of course). They're super-low maintenance and easy to take care of. If kept indoors they will avoid most of the common health issues, not to mention not bringing ticks and whatnot in the house with them.

That all may be true, but they aren’t dogs.

Household pets should never exceed the human household population.

Btw... as someone who has cohabitated with cats for much of his adult life, I can say with confidence that cats have very little respect for the human species. They really don’t understand the hierarchy of beings. I refuse to be thought of as their janitor, lunch lady or jungle gym to play on.

So I got that going for me.

Went for a walk yesterday and shattered my record again. I saw 2 yellow balls on the other side of a small stream on the golf course. There were thorns on both sides, so I almost didn't try to get them, but the kids like the fluorescent yellow ones. I jumped across the creek and made my way through the thorns. When I got to the yellow balls, I saw there was 2 more white ones right there. Then I looked up and saw tons more all over the place. Every time I walked to another ball, I would see another cluster. I had sweatpants on with big stretchy pockets so I kept stuffing them in until they started falling out as I walked.

26 balls in about 15 minutes. I think I've found close to 100 balls over the last 6 months walking the course. The other day we played miniature golf in the house, setting up a "hole" in one part of the apartment and then we all take turns using the fire poker as a putter. Then we switched the hole to a new room and we had to make our way there.

I'm going to gather up all the balls and drop them off at the clubhouse before we leave. I know some places clean them and sell them and I don't want to steal their income.

My cat that I had for 20 years was more like a dog. Crinkle up some paper and he'd come running. He would climb bookshelves to get the paper if we threw it up there. And he would fetch until he was exhausted. My roommates and I would take turns with him. And the rest of the time he liked being next to us or on a lap. I miss him.

Say what you want about these two scamps, the song is still catchy as hell:
