Fortunately, Biden and his team are better prepared than most.

More from Mattis:

“When I joined the military, some 50 years ago,” he writes, “I swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution. Never did I dream that troops taking that same oath would be ordered under any circumstance to violate the Constitutional rights of their fellow citizens—much less to provide a bizarre photo op for the elected commander-in-chief, with military leadership standing alongside.”

It's a Change Research poll. Not the greatest of reputations. On the other hand, Fox News polling has a very good reputation.

Don’t follow the poles but isn’t his overall approval rating the same (or about the same) as it was when we had record low unemployment? Heard that from Ian Bremer in a TV hit today. Didn’t fact check

He's jeopardizing the religious vote, and giving those folks a reason to sit out or vote Biden. I'm interested to see the magnitude of that error play out in polls the next few weeks. Evangelical leaders are turning on him.

It’s kind of a split decision on religious leaders’ support of Trump’s photo op:

But in the religious constituency Donald Trump cares most about, and for whom the stunt was almost certainly designed, the reaction was very different, as McKay Coppins reports:

A few hours after the dystopian spectacle, I spoke on the phone with Robert Jeffress, a Dallas megachurch pastor and indefatigable Trump ally. He sounded almost gleeful.

“I thought it was completely appropriate for the president to stand in front of that church,” Jeffress told me. “And by holding up the Bible, he was showing us that it teaches that, yes, God hates racism, it’s despicable—but God also hates lawlessness …”

“I will never forget seeing [Trump] slowly & in-total-command walk … across Lafayette Square to St. John’s Church defying those who aim to derail our national healing by spreading fear, hate & anarchy,” wrote Johnnie Moore, the president of the Congress of Christian Leaders.

In an email to me, Ralph Reed, the chairman of the Faith and Freedom Coalition, heaped praise on Trump for his visit: “His presence sent the twin message that our streets and cities do not belong to rioters and domestic terrorists, and that the ultimate answer to what ails our country can be found in the repentance, redemption, and forgiveness of the Christian faith.”

According to 538 his average is as bad as it’s been since January when he was getting impeached.

Well we were at 3.5% unemployment then which I guess goes to the point the guy was making. Around 20% soon

Momentum means a lot as the election nears. I 'm happy that he's losing in so many places, but let's see where it is in September. The numbers will tighten as they always do as republican voters come home to roost with their collection of loser presidents. I feel like the GOP candidate is almost always behind at this point. I might be wrong about that, but it seems that way. Then they close. How fast and how much will determine the outcome. If he gets within 5 points, I think Trump wins. The electoral college and cheating will take care of at least 5 points.

Looks like those unmarked soldiers in the streets of DC include people from the Bureau of Prisons, who are trained to deal prison riots. What could go wrong?

He's coopting the most violent trained police force he can find. Add that to the militia groups, the white supremacists, and whatever other violent groups he can find, and he has himself the makings of a small army. The actual military may be the only thing standing between us and a dictatorship, and I mean that literally.
