I don't think enough people get severely sick for it to get that bad. Most of our miseries will be self-imposed in an effort to avoid the virus. If it gets to the point that so many people are sick that important things start closing, the less sick and healthy will go to work, especially since many of the very sick will be retired/old.
Now if there's a mutation that makes it more deadly or it starts to infect the young more severely, then we may be looking at your scenario.

There aren’t that many severely sick people now. The point is that anyone who has it — even if not severely sick or even asymptomatic— can pass it on, which is why so many things are being closed/cancelled.
