Politics: What’s so Super about Tuesday?

Housing Secretary Ben Carson said because non-white workers at President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort “love him,” that proves the president is not a racist. “He’s a man who is deeply driven by a sense of kindness and compassion,” Carson said. “You know, talking to the people who drive the cars and park the cars at Mar-a-Lago, they love him — the people who wash the dishes — because he’s kind and compassionate.”

And he has the Twitter account to prove it. BTW, these comments came literally hours after Trump fired Lt. Col.s Vindman and Sondlund. Compassion, Donald J. Trump is thy name.

At risk of being repetitive, this Philly tinged story from the SOTU is curious. Perhaps I missed it coming up. Trump made a big deal out of a surprise scholarship to get a student out of a failing school, but she attends Math, Science and Technology Community Charter School III, which is hyper competitive. I a proponent of just taking the money, but that is some myth that comes along with the payoff.

Last week, Sanders overtook Biden in 538’s forecast. More impressively, so did “No majority.”

If Bernie wins as expected tomorrow, and can take Nevada... perhaps my prediction comes true!

unfortunately there seems to be a legion of 'never berniers" forming on the D side. Hopefully they won't sit home in november if he does in fact get the nod.

sanders is the left's version of ron paul to middle america. he's probably the only candidate that could probably lose to trump. if the economy is fine by november, regardless of how awful trump is... people are going to choose the devil you know vs the devil you don't.

much better to see warren come out of the convention. honestly, i would say she's more of a lock. i think the moderate/centrists who i'm more aligned with personally would absolutely destroy trump.

I voted for Bernie over Hillary in 2016 but given the good economy (I know, I know, it’s not good for many) and how he will be branded a socialist in the context of that good economy I don’t think he can beat Trump this year. It’s just a bridge too far for too many Americans. I’ll certainly vote for him but his politics are a bit too scary for the moderates he’ll need to win.

At this time 4 years ago, there seemed to be clearer differences in nat'l gen elex polls by candidate:.

RCP avg 2-10-16
Clinton 47, Trump 42
Rubio 48, Clinton 43
Cruz 46, Clinton 46

Today
Biden 50, Trump 45
Sanders 49, Trump 45
Warren 48, Trump 46
Buttigieg 46, Trump 45

Democrats show like they have a national edge over Trump, but Clinton only had an edge over him and lost (though the national polls don’t predict electoral college results).

It was more that I saw that tweet right before Az said here that Bernie could probably lose to Trump

I have said many times Warren is my preferred candidate; my rooting interest for Bernie now is to prove my political acumen (and because I prefer to give a real-left, not center-left, candidate a try).

But as much as I do want Liz (and I do; I signed petitions for all of her delegates in my area of PA on Saturday), I don’t see how anyone could conceivably refer to her as any kind of a “lock,” even if you only mean relative to Sanders. She will be lucky to win two primaries if she makes it through Super Tuesday (MA, and maybe MN).

I am rooting for Sanders as much because I think Warren’s withdrawal is inevitable, and sooner rather than later. Unless of course she is just looking to stop him and gets money for that purpose, which is plausible but unlikely.

And for what it’s worth, in a good economy, I am increasingly of the opinion, driven by a logic equal to but opposite of yours, that a moderate will lose, because a bland moderate will not provide enough of an interesting alternative to risk changing horses mid stream over. Sanders/Warren represent something decidedly different in American politics from what we have had; Biden and the rest, not so much, except on the identity level of Buttigieg being a gay man. Which is nice and all, I’d be all for it... if he were, you know, an actual liberal. And if he is the nominee, he’ll get my vote, no question.

In 'good' news, the quinnipiac national survey H2Hs were all pretty good. Basically anyone but Warren, Buttigieg wins the election. They probably do too, but depending on where the vote is split, a 4% victory still could be an EC loss.

That said, these are probably useless before the general so nothing matters, etc.

There actually seems to be some interesting political theory underlying Warren's policy prescriptions. I'm not sure if it matters much practically or electorally, but it seems philosophically significant that Warren is a market reformist, much more in the tradition of the New Deal and Sanders I think would rather eliminate them.

I'd really be curious to learn what books on politics each has read and which they think are important. I'm guessing Warren's list would be a lot more impressive than Bernie's.

^^^ Haha, this strikes me as the understatement of the century. I have no doubt Elizabeth Warren could run circles around Bernie in any legitimate, studied discussion of any actual political, economic, or political economy conversation they would ever have. I feel equally certain she would do the same to all of the others (including Trump, of course). Only Biden would probably even make it close - I assume he could replace book-learnin' with a certain earthy, hard-won, street-fighter's elucidation of practical political philosophy - and his day is past.

For this reason I would love it if she won. I simply think that ship has sailed.

I’m also quite pro-Warren. A big reason because she seems likable and genuine.

She just gets it... that’s such a great response.
