phatj wrote:Finally did something this evening I've been wanting to do for a few years now... got a 4K TV to use as a computer monitor. My previous home office setup consisted of my laptop's 14" screen and two 19" 1280x1024 monitors. Now I have 43" of 4K glory as my main monitor with the laptop off to the side for auxiliary stuff. It's, like, RILLY BIG. I have to say this isn't an ideal setup; this is one use case where a curved display actually makes sense; at normal monitor viewing distances the corners of the TV are noticeably dimmer but I don't think this will be a problem as the stuff that is my main focus will be centered. The bigger problem is window management. I think I need to find a good utility that allows you to divide up a large display into smaller virtual monitors so I can have my stuff snap to where I want it without having to manually resize every single window (especially once my office reopens and I'm not using the home office exclusively having to rearrange my windows every time I change location is going to be a PITA).

By the way, if anyone was thinking of making a Costco run for groceries this weekend, you'll be too late. Electronics on the other hand, no worries!

What TV did you pick up and CPU and video for your laptop? Been wanting to do this too. I got two 1080p 32 inch monitors, I kinda want to replace with a big ass 4k.

TV is a TCL 4-series 43-inch. Laptop is a HP EliteBook G3 I think. It's upstairs and I'm lazy. Dunno the graphics card setup but it's some crappy integrated Intel. Still drives the display at 3840x2160 60Hz though. I also hooked up one of the 1280x1024 monitors because I have space for it on my desk so why not?

A few thoughts after using this all day for work:
* If you do screen sharing through Jabber or Webex or whatever, keep in mind that whoever you're sharing with probably has a 1080P monitor. To work around this, if you have a smaller monitor in your setup as well (as I do), move whatever you want to share to that and share it instead of the big one; alternatively you can temporarily set your biggun to 1080P.
* If you use RDP keep in mind that Alt-Tab app switching only works if the RDP session is full screen. I usually do no want my RDP session full screen as it is not my main focus at any given time.
* The corner dimming is definitely noticeable but not really problematic if you're relatively mobile. I roll around in my chair some to better see the corners but this is obviously not ideal. If you can afford it a curved, purpose-built 4K monitor would be a better choice.
* Going smaller than 40 inches would be a mistake, in my opinion, unless your eyesight is top-notch. I checked out a 32-inch 4K monitor at a store going on five years ago and while I probably would have been able to work with it then, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't now without my reading glasses.
* I haven't found a good solution for screen splitting. There's a product which looks pretty cool called UltraView which is $99 and no free preview. For it to serve my needs it would have to integrate with the OS so I could pick the screen I want to share in Jabber or whatever and 100 bucks is too rich for my blood for an experiment.
* Many applications open by default in full screen which is usually absurd on a 4K display. Resizing them is not a big deal on a case-by-case basis but becomes a PITA the 100th time you have to do it.
* Microsoft really needs to build something into Windows to handle this kind of scenario which I imagine is becoming more common. The snapping to the top, sides, bottom or corners that Windows supports is not really adequate with a really large, high-resolution display.

Overall I'm pretty happy with the setup. I did my work this evening with the main display split between three separate windows of the same application displaying different things, that I used to have as full screen windows that I would have to switch between with Alt-Tab, and even then would not have been able to see as much. Meanwhile I had Outlook open on my laptop screen and other stuff on the third monitor.

My wife gets cool ranch doritos as a treat when she sees them, which is rare. The smell makes me want to vomit. I can only assume that there's something terribly wrong with you, perhaps the same affliction as my wife.

Nauseated. No need for Doritos to make you nauseous.

So bummed. Very rarely get to see my grown kids, and had planned a trip down to watch my son run his first marathon this coming weekend in Virginia Beach, picking up my daughter in Baltimore along the way. Marathon was canceled a while ago, but held out stubborn hope until a few days ago that I still might make the trip just to visit. Obviously not going to do that, and somehow the fact that it's the right thing doesn't really make me feel any better about it.
