I feel as though this assumes that in the handful of states where there are R senators up for re-election and they are vulnerable, their vote in this proceeding will make a difference. Haven’t looked at it lately but I know the senate map for Ds this time sucks, there are far more vulnerable D seats than R, and so even if you were right, I would submit that a vote to convict for vulnerable D is likely to be as problematic as a vote to acquit for a vulnerable R, and so we are likely, at best, playing a zero sum game, and at worst, maybe the Ds lose a little ground.
I feel confident these proceedings will have no more impact on the general election than Donald Trumps’s general all around douchey behavior would have had.
