Why do you consider the science around vaccinations a belief?

good lord dude, are we going to play a semantics game in an attempt to belittle and shame me? somehow believe and belief are the same thing? do i need to really spend my time to point out how differently each word is used in both of our contexts?

by the way, i did say i was NOT anti-vac. i believe in the shots for kids and tetanus. i find the flu to always be changing, it mutates constantly and i find myself in good enough health where i don't feel it's necessary for me. you give me a vac that's close to 100% i'm in, without a doubt.

You may not believe that you're in any particular danger from the flu, but even if you contract it and survive with nothing more than a couple days' misery, you put others in danger if you do not self-quarantine while contagious (and going to CVS to get some Tylenol Cold & Flu counts as breaking quarantine). The very young, the elderly, and the immuno-compromised in particular are vulnerable, as well as everyone else who doesn't get flu shots because they do not have access, cannot afford it, or are an idiot.

100% or close to it is an impossible standard for the flu virus as you note, but every percentage point helps protect you, as well as everyone else you could come in contact with while sick.

Changing subjects, after my brief and undistinguished career as a roller derby referee, I am now switching to swimming. Looking forward to DQing my own kids.

Can you pass the flu without contracting the flu?

My company has a pharmacist come in every year to administer flu shots so I had mine yesterday. Every company should do it

Mine and my wife's employers both set up flu shot clinics. Happily to got poked. Even if it turns out to be 20 - 30% effective in a really bad year I prefer the hedge against a week or two of severe illness. One of my kids was a clean miss with the vaccine preventing his illness last year and he was literally down for 2 weeks.

Maybe hypothetically, but probably not.

Healthy people should get it to help protect people that are young/old/immuno-compromised. The relative harm/risk is basically zero unless you have had a reaction in the past or have a specific egg allergy.

idk it is mostly a factor of laziness. i have been sick in the past few years. some sort of virus which they can never do anything for. they dont say it is the flu though--- always a bug that is going around or something.

Most CVS/Rite Aids can do it. All urgent cares/minute clinics too. All for free with insurance of course. Just grab one when you're running errands one day.

I think in previous years it was perhaps laziness on my part too. I got it some years, others didn't. Last few years I have gotten it though and I feel compelled to get it every year from here on out. It's necessary. I got it last year and honestly hadn't felt that great throughout a winter maybe in my entire life. I didn't get sick once, barely even a sniffle.

Last time I was in Target they were out asking people if they want a flu shot. I’ve never had one, but I guess I probably should.

I do not think that there is any real measure that the flu only kills the very young or very old. Certainly those extremes are susceptible for similar yet different reasons, but the health middle see plenty of flu related death just because. It is not terribly discriminant (see college student, accomplished amateur athletes, etc.)

FWIW, a guy in an office I worked at came in because he needed to get out of the house where his 2 kids and wife had the flu. I do not know what he touched in the office (door handles, kitchen stuff, etc., but we had 5 people with in a few days come down with it. Coincidental, certainly, but he is my 2015 model year Typhoid Mary. He never got it, and neither did I, but we only had a dozen people in that office, so losing almost 50% was very, very ungood.

We started doing the same this year. Apparently it wasn’t advertised very well (at all?) because a bunch of coworkers complained they didn’t know. It was right in our lunch room, so I got one even though I didn’t know it was a thing.
Fine. You wanna act like you're two? I'll act like I'm one.

unless they're giving out flu shots at the local mcdonald's....

mcrib > flu shot

yes the mcrib is back, the flu shot may have to wait another week or so.
