You mean the conversation with your MIL that went, "Ever spew your bullshit to my kid again, you won't see him/her any more"? That conversation?

I'm less confrontational than that IRL, but my wife was all over her about injecting politics into convos unnecessarily... I chose a good wife. We're years away from reaching that threat with the MIL, because we will only say it if we mean it. We don't see them that often already, so it's something that's manageable. We've basically told her there is no politics discussion allowed in our house when she visits. To summarize her politics, she is a Latina Trump supporter who gets her news from Facebook memes. Identifies as conservative but cares way too much about other people's business... I guess she's just a social conservative, which covers most of it. She's a secure GOP vote who thinks that the media is out to get Trump.

I got a rude text maybe a month ago from a (very lefty) uncle I get along well with sent to me and one of my dad's other brothers who is also a Republican who dislikes Trump. It was sent at like 3 AM, and he was almost certainly well past the legal limit to drive while composing his message. Neither me nor the recipient uncle responded. Just saw the sending uncle over the 4th in Jersey and had a good time with him without bringing it up. Very Irish of us.

Politics and family is always tough, especially if they aren't great with reading boundaries or live in bubbles like your MIL so don't even know when they're crossing lines. You know she means well, so that counts for a lot, and speaking more generally, unless the person is repeatedly and irredeemably aggressive about it, it'd be sad to cut off a familial relationship over politics.

They would seem to be a candidate for a person who was irredeemably aggressive about it

I was suprised walking around DC over the weekend how many people were wearing Trump paraphernalia. Saw a guy walking around the museum of natural history with his family wearing a "get over it, TRUMP won" t-shirt tucked into jorts. Saw women walking around the mall wearing sequined red trump hats. One guy with a God, Guns, Trump shirt. Various other MAGA hats and Trump 2020 shirts.

I guess I get that some people just could never vote for a democrat for ideological reasons, but I just don't understand how you could actually like Trump and what he's doing or the way he's portraying our country. He's such a bufoon and evreytime he opens his mouth he says something stupider than the last time. Why would you want that sort of person to represent you.

I am exactly where you are. As I have said before, I can understand the initial vote "against the establishment" in 2016 (even though I vehemently disagree with it) and I get the never Democrat thing because of abortion and guns. Wearing Trump gear, however, takes it to another level. That, to me, expresses tacit approval of the man and his methods and that tells me all I need to know about you (not you specifically, Bill) as a person.

If you're actually wearing Trump gear, it's not tacit approval, it's explicit and enthusiastic approval. The most plausible explanation then for such people is they like Trump, they like locking kids in cages and the all the rest. One problem I think too many of us has failed to recognize is there are a lot of votes in pointless cruelty.

Trump’s only true skill is the con; his only fundamental belief is that the United States is the birthright of straight, white, Christian men, and his only real, authentic pleasure is in cruelty. It is that cruelty, and the delight it brings them, that binds his most ardent supporters to him, in shared scorn for those they hate and fear: immigrants, black voters, feminists, and treasonous white men who empathize with any of those who would steal their birthright. The president’s ability to execute that cruelty through word and deed makes them euphoric. It makes them feel good, it makes them feel proud, it makes them feel happy, it makes them feel united. And as long as he makes them feel that way, they will let him get away with anything, no matter what it costs them.

Tomi Lahren
@TomiLahren
You don’t have to like @realDonaldTrump but when you have a giant “USA” on your back, you represent this country and ALL Americans. @mPinoe you’re not a hero, you’re a virtue-signaling soccer player with a chip on her shoulder and an attitude problem. Get over yourself.

Tomi Lahren telling anybody to get over themselves is the most ironic thing you'll hear/read this year. Plus, you have yet another far-right loon equating disapproval of Trump with being un-American. Funny but I don't remember Lahren or Watters or Limbaugh or Hannity or the rest of them calling people out for being un-American or unpatriotic when they were critical of Obama, or actively pushing birtherism, or posting memes of Barack and/or Michelle as monkeys. The hypocrisy of the right is beyond galling.

I'd be interested to hear the SC's take on their rulings being subverted by the Executive. In the instant case, I imagine even the conservative justices would have a problem with the Court being ignored.

Was listening to Fresh Air earlier this week and they had a gerrymandering reporter from Mother Jones on who was getting into the census question and how it impacts redistricting etc. He commented that the perception is that John Roberts cares about the way the Supreme Court is perceived and is not going to like the way the WH after a year plus of arguing that the citizenship question should be on the census to aid in the enforcement of the voting rights act is pivoting to change the rationale for including it after the supreme court struck said that the original rationale is not sufficient. He also said that the president does not have authority over the census, congress does, and if the president were to try to use an executive order to include the question, it would be unconstitutional. So fun times.

There is no way that order doesn't get shot down by the Supreme Court. This is just a photo op for Trump and another opportunity to rev up his base.

It's from a dropped lawsuit against Trump and Epstein from 2016. Pretty nasty shit.
