I think I could convince myself that the there are enough Republican senators who would think it would be better politics to vote to convict and remove.

Yup. They live in fear of that tweet from Trump dissing them leading to getting primaried.

My rough count has 10 Republicans with Senate terms that extend to 2024. I'm skeptical that anyone should worry about a primary challenge in 5 years from now. You take him out now and he's forgotten in 2 years. Just my take. Maybe there's a little wishful thinking in there.

Not just individual people or primaries, imo. The entire party is beholden to Trump now.

Well it's not just that. They know 2020 is a lost cause if Trump is removed from office with bipartisan support. It's a complete admission that they've lost the party.

Maybe its just wishful thinking but I think the rational analysis is that the Trump base came out to vote Republican before Trump and will do so after Trump. The political attention span in this country is like 6 weeks tops.

Republicans would have impeached 18 months ago but yeah let’s wait another 20 months for an election we may or may not win as we watch our democracy and the rule of law crumble.

While I more or less agree with not going forward with impeachment unless there's good reason to believe you'll get enough Republican Senators to convict, I certainly would not take the option off the table yet. It seems to me quite possible that even though actually removing Trump from office is unlikely to succeed, continued house investigations are warranted and could continue to inflict political damage on the Republicans. The redacted Mueller report I think is pretty damaging to the President, and the climate could easily shift to a point where support for impeachment continues to grow, putting swing state Republicans in a pretty uncomfortable position.

Don't think impeachment has to completely succeed for it to be successful. If it throws enough of Trump's dealings into light that it turns off some swing voters then it's worth it.

Likely worth waiting until all the extra Mueller referrals go through in case they relate directly to Trump (and his business) or his children. Dems will know that after they get their subpoenad unredacted report.

12 referrals made for criminal conduct outside the scope of the investigation are still secret

The campaign knew about the WikiLeaks dump that was to come on July 22nd 2016 and were already planning responses
