This summer my friends dad went missing down the shore. Turned out he went swimming, had a heart attack, and died in the ocean. His family found his things on the beach but didn’t know where he was and reported him missing. Then he washed up on shore. It was such a horrible thing for the family. He had just retired and he and his wife were just starting to enjoy their time together

Life and is so random and death doesn't care who or what you are.

If only that guy wasn't swimming or my friend's dad took an extra three minutes putting on his sneakers.

Making lunch plans with my Mom. We don't get to see each other as much since they moved out to Audubon (PA) which is a bummer because we're very close and she's very important to me. Not everyone has a close/good relationship with their parents so it's something I'm really appreciative of. It's also sort of strange right now, she was only 20 when I was born and since my career took this unexpected jumpstart ~6 years ago most of my peers now are about her age.

How did you determine this, and what did you do about it? Starting to think we may have this problem

i have always been fascinated by lights. there's an exhibit that i want to see at the desert botanical gardens put on by the klip collective. i will go regardless, but trying to get a bunch of friends to go with. they are a little on the fence about this. i heard they are from philly and put on shows/displays regularly in the area. any of you go and see one of them? hate to hype something up and then finding out it's a little lame.

If I fill my tea kettle with warm water rather than cold or room temperature, will it boil faster?

Edit: don't do this

edit 2: the tea is pretty good

Short answer: Yes, but not enough to matter.

I was almost ready to say "don't do that", but stopped short for two reasons.

#1: The tale is that hot water can pick up impurities from your home's pipes, so always cook with cold water. But then I realized you're boling the water anyway.
#2: I'm not really sure if that tale is true or an old wive's tale that maybe was true when we had lead pipes in our homes or something like that.

But as WfO points out, it doesn't do enough to matter, so it's basically a waste of hot water. So don't do this unless you're in someone else's house.

Boiling water doesnt remove impurities. Especially thr heavy metals that might leach from pipes. In fact, it concentrates them. It does of, course kill micro organisms.

Hot water dissolves minerals more readily than cold so it's definitely true. With modern plumbing (i.e. not lead) it's not much of a health issue but the water can pick up off tastes, particularly when you have hot water just sitting for long periods as in a hot water heater. In our house the hot water is supplied by the furnace boiler so there is no hot water heater with a large tank, and by the time the water from the tap gets hot you've flushed all the water from the pipes so there's no time for the hot water to pick up any unwanted flavors.

Uncle Milty wrote:Depends on the starting temp difference. Assume heating 1 liter of water with a 1500 watts. 120 degree water will boil about 2 minutes faster than 50 degree water.

Yup. As our hot water comes from the boiler literally boiling, it's mixed downstream with cold water but the mixer is currently set to a high hot:cold ratio so our hot tap water is ~180 degrees. Makes a big difference when boiling water (whether it saves any money is another question but it certainly saves time).

TenuredVulture wrote:Boiling water doesnt remove impurities. Especially thr heavy metals that might leach from pipes. In fact, it concentrates them. It does of, course kill micro organisms.

Correct. Though running the tap for a short while before filling your glass or whatever will flush the water from the pipes so what you get afterwards should be relatively clean.

I think Longwood has done this? If so, I have heard they're fantastic. Would have gone, but, kids. Specifically, little kid who can't stay up late.
