By not giving up and doing experimental trials you have made, and will continue to make, a huge impact on so many lives.

You are one of the best people I have ever known. You have that unique gift of not only being a top notch storyteller but also an exceptional listener. I will always be grateful for how you and Carmen welcomed me into your home and helped me through some really tough years. It was like having an extra big brother or cool uncle, only thousands of miles from home.

Still have never had a mojito that tops yours. And your Seattle cheesesteak is right up there with any of the so called bests in Philly. Watching Doc's perfect game together will always be one of my greatest memories. I am coming to Seattle the second week of September and really hope I get to see you.

Missin' you, McFadden's:

Man, this post got me. It's one thing when you read stuff from a guy like Smitty and think, man, this guy is funny as hell, smart, interesting, and seems like a good guy, but it's comforting--and heartbreaking--to hear that's genuinely who he is. I hope you have comfort and peace.

Not much I can add that has not already been said. For you to battle as long (and successfully) as you have says a lot about the kind of person you are, the kind of character you possess. People with such high character only make the world a brighter place, especially in these tumultuous times. I hope whatever time you have left is filled with family, peace, love, and comfort. I will continue to pray for you and your family. God bless you.

absolutely gutted - I gasped reading Smitty's last post and sorry only seeing it now.
Smitty - thank you for everything - you've made this little corner of the internet where we all like to hang out so much brighter. And though we never met in person I'm glad to have known you across the keyboards. I wish you comfort and peace and the Spurs putting the little ball into the huge net over and over against City this weekend.

Seems like I always get to the bad news late. Smitty, so sorry to hear this. But from what you've said, you're going to be comfortable and surrounded by the people you love, and that's a hell of a thing. you and your family will be in my thoughts, man. I never did make it across the water to a phils game to have a drink with you, but sure, when I do get to a bsg do (and it will happen), I'll be thinking of you when I have my first beer.

You take care Smitty. hugs and props to you and yours from way across the water.

Smitty, your calm and poise in breaking this news to us is exceptional. It has pretty much devastated me, so I can't imagine how you feel inside. You are an exceptional human. Through our few personal interactions and copious online interactions you have made me a better person. And this is not hyperbole. More than once I curtailed an angry response to a fellow poster because I thought 'Smitty would not do that'.

I continue to hold out hope for a miracle. But please know that you left the world a better place than you found it. And that is the true mark of a man. I would say I hope you are finding peace in this most difficult of times, but that would be redundant, as it is clear to me that you have always been someone who has been at peace with yourself no matter what externalities attempt to intrude.

Love you man.

(Brandy) only hinted at Halladay's personal issues during her Hall of Fame speech last July, when she said, "Roy would want everyone to know that people are not perfect. We're all imperfect and flawed in one way or another. We all struggle."

Although I pray for you every night, I was thinking about you again this morning so I thought I would pop in here to say "Hi" and let you know that you are still on all of our minds. I hope all is as well as can be expected and you are enjoying time with family and friends.

My thoughts as well.Another reason to rue the end of the baseball season is missing contact with you. We'll have to commit ourselves to the wrestling thread. Well, maybe film instead.
