CalvinBall wrote:JH still embraces the horrid enablers like Ryan and McConnell and the spineless Marco Rubio. Somehow those guys are good Republicans. I can't delineate between them and Trump. Ryan is unable to call out a member for promoting Nazism, but it's not Trump's party or something.

Insofar as this is a response to Wolfgang's post, Moz is too kind to me. By far. And I am more convinced than ever I hope he wins. Plus how good of a Republican can the guy he's running against be if he's getting endorsed by labor :q ?

My response...you are a man who has political opinions, as am I. Just because Donald freaking Trump got elected president doesn't mean I think I was wrong about my preferences on taxation or entitlement reform or energy exploration or trade or the judicial branch or whatever else. On some of these he is doing OK, on others he is an abject failure, all the while disgracing the office and country with his behavior. But I am pretty sure the solution to my current distress about our country's governance issues is not to put Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer in charge of Congress or down the line to elect Bernie or whomever to replace him. Like, I'd vote happily for Biden 2020 to evict Donald, but not looking to sing the Internationale.

I would love for the GOP Congress to be more of a bulwark against him, but GOP primary voters kinda suck, and so do some of the rank and file members. Ryan and McConnell should do more to allow things to the floor that have support with GOP reps like pushing back on Trump tariffs. I would love for us to be in a perfect world, but we aren't, so I am picking the path that seems like the least imperfect to me. They've all got their pluses and minuses, and since March 2016 it has been clear that any possible path will have many more minuses than pluses for me for the foreseeable future. Hopefully something changes soon that will make that no longer the case. Till then I'll support the people in Congress who I mostly agree with even if I think they're being overly accommodating to Trump, because otherwise I've got nothing better.

Except Paul Ryan has power and ignores all the bad that Trump and the Trump era is. JH is relatively powerless (sorry?) and quite clear in his distaste for Trump and what he's doing to our institutions.

I don't get how you can fucking hate Kennedy outside of blinded partisanship. He was a conservative Justice and wrote so many blood boiling-ly infuriating decisions; however, he also voted on some landmark liberal cases. He has helped preserve Roe v. Wade, expanded gay rights in the bedroom, and finally penned the opinion in Obergefell.

No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice,
and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were. As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage.

Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right

i think he's a weasel

the only reason we're supposed to think he's OK is because the court is so conservative in general. you admit he's a conservative Justice but to many in the public he's a moderate because the media has portrayed him as such for years.

Going to delude myself into thinking we have a chance in turning the Senate. I wish the map was better. Democrats are in a hard place on this SCOTUS nomination because historically Republicans are much better at weaponizing and motivating on this issue. If Democrats do everything to delay the GOP will shameless label them as obstructionists (hypocrisy is dead), but if Democrats cave even a little they risk alienating most of their base who want to see them fighting tooth and nail against Trump.

How so though? That just seems like an optics issue, and not anything substantive. I'm not asking for you or anyone to be OK with him, he gave us fucking Citizens United, but there are real reasons to respect the Justice and his legacy too.

i also think Ginsburg is too self-satisfied and should've retired a few years ago if she truly cared about the balance of the court. the egos of these people annoy me; even in his decision on Obergefell he came across to me as full of himself

Feel like you have to be somewhat full of yourself to be a supreme court justice. And RBG certainly should have retired in 2014. Same age as Kennedy is now.

To be fair, she's probably in better shape than most of us though, but at her age the likelihood of random injuries being more severe are large.

Win the Senate back, if Trump can get elected President we can win the seats in Arizona, Tennessee, and Nevada (while holding on in other key places please).

Obama should've done a recess appointment because the Senate refused to act on his nomination.

sometimes he was a real wuss. they'd have cried 'norms!!!' but norms were already dead by then. now they've been shot about 15 times by Trump and his GOP

I'm fairly sure that McConnell held pro forma sessions to ensure a recess appointment couldn't happen.

Have a feeling people will appreciate Kennedy much more once his replacement is in place.

Also, I'm pretty sure that everybody thought that Hilary was going to win.

Well yes, but either way that didn't matter if Obama wasn't constitutionally permitted to make an appointment if there was no recess.
