In order to bolster coal-fired and nuclear power plants, the Trump administration is working on a pair of federal laws to order grid operators to buy electricity from the plants.

The U.S. Department of Energy would use emergency authority to direct the operators from at-risk facilities, according to Bloomberg.

The agency also wants to develop a "Strategic Electric Generation Reserve" to promote national defense and maximize energy supplies, according to a draft National Security Council memo, Bloomberg reports.

Nuclear and coal-fired plants are struggling against renewable energy sources and cheaper natural gas.

They are literally murdering people.

Nearly as many people die from the air pollution caused by coal than in automobile deaths each year. This is a significant public health issue. They going to sneak all this stuff into law while we're all focused on Trump's show.

he won anyway because he was good at campaigning and had a general message people liked.

people that lose find shit to blame and point to quotes like deplorables or lehman sisters or whatever. anyone can be made to look almost any way if you let the machine do it to you. this is why you break through in a different way and ignore that garbage.

Again — zero upside. A cheap thrill for guaranteed Dem voters.

I agree. This is why I was so annoyed at Gillibrand a few weeks ago. She was at some event with other top democrat hopefuls. In the middle of her speech about women's issues, she said that we wouldn't have had a financial crisis if Lehman Bros was called Lehman Sisters. On top of being ridiculously sexist and not actually very funny, she may have lost 10-15% of the electorate with that one joke. I guarantee it will be played again and again (assuming it's on tape/video) if she's in the serious running for POTUS. It's the type of comment that cements tribalism and gains you nothing.
this joke will not matter at all.

Nobody is saying anything like this.

I take your point that the right is garbage and will always caterwaul, but every little misstep counts. Calling people cunts and deplorable can only hurt.

And Hillary could have very easily still reached out to the soft Trump voters without attacking the others. It was just a cheap laugh line.

If he had a better opponent, maybe it would have been closer and maybe that comment would have made a difference. If you think it didn't help to further cement hardcore gun owners and religious people against the democratic party, then I think you need to talk to these people. I'm not saying you have to pay attention to all that garbage, but maybe openly antagonizing people isn't the best way to get across your message.

it was a tough environment for a Democrat to win a third term and she was a bad candidate; it happens. I really think people overrate this stuff, but I think you and I are at an impasse with this. we understand each other and just disagree. WHICH MEANS YOU SUCK! :)

Hilary lost for a number of reasons, many of them structural (the electoral college). But her "personality" problem I think had a lot do with the fact that deep down she's a technocrat. There's simply nothing in her political past that shows she cares about receiving input from ordinary people. She has always pursued policy in a top down fashion. I would argue (and there's a great political science book by Page and Shapiro that backs me up) that the reason Clinton's healthcare reform failed was because it was conceived by a bunch of technocrats with practically no input from ordinary people (or their representatives.)

Somewhat paradoxically, I think the other thing that hurt her was her long history of trying to appeal to moderates and even conservatives--her vote for the Iraq war is the thing that cost her the nomination in 2008, and deservedly so. All this made her appear as someone who really had few political commitments, who was more a weathervane than a political leader.

Or Australian

The clip does point out that Bee's "error" is that she's a little too immersed in the bubble. I saw one news story that described cunt "generally accepted as the worst thing one can call a woman." Not, it's not! (Said in a Jim Jefferies accent). In some circles now it's quite common and slung around as certainly no worse than dick and very often less than that. But in many other places that description is still regarded as true (the reasons why exactly are interesting to explore).

She shouldn't have said because of the ramifications, but I've got no problem with the actual use and the context. And of course it's useless to argue that no matter what bad word one directs at an individual it doesn't in any way compare with tagging an entire race as sub-human, whcih was clearly waht Roseanne was conveying to her supporters. I'm not a tremendous fan of Samantha Bee's show (as I've mentioned before), but certainly if anyone's feminist credentials are impeccable hers are, so she was in no way impugning an entire sex. There are rude thoughts and dangerous thoughts. I get a little distressed when supposed liberals can't even identify the difference.

As an aside, I don't consider myself a prude when it comes to profanity at all, but I am not sure alleged reappropriation of these terms (the c one, the n one, and even the b one) is doing anyone any good.

In some respects, I think LGBTQ activists have much better political instincts regarding all this. You don't hear this (at least in public) the f word being used this way.

More to the point, the resistance could do a lot worse and look at how Act Up and other organizations responded to the HIV crisis and the rampant homophobia it unleashed. Memories are short, but a relatively small persecuted minority was able to chalk up lots of impressive political victories. Those strategies should be more widely adapted.

The southeastern US is one of the worst places, too. They are voting for people who are trying to kill them. It's crazy.

Even before this whole thing happened, I was wondering the other day when “cunt” become such a terrible word, because these are the sorts of things I spend my time thinking about. It was always considered worse than “bitch”, but not by much, and people didn't gasp in horror if you said it. Now we have to refer to it as “The C word”. Now we’re having a politics thread.

I would guess prior to today 75% of the usage of the word cunt on BSG occurred in the soccer threads
