How weird would it be to go back to a house you lived in when you were 6 (1972) and knock on the door and ask to look around? Does it make a difference that the house is somewhat historical? (and that my parents were part of getting its historical provenance somehow recognized and I think have their name on a plaque or something?)

Not very weird. I had a guy stop by not too long ago who had grown up in my house. Showed him around and he told some stories. Pretty neat. He's a maintenance guy for the local school district and I've run into him several times since then while on fire business.

Drew Margary was in Minneapolis for super bowl week and he went to his child hood home and the people let him walk around and stuff. Seems like it's a thing people do I suppose, but like someone else said, maybe try to make contact online first rather than just knock on the door.

Someone pulled up to my house a year or two ago claiming to have lived in the home 50 years ago. I didnt invite him into my home (I have young kids), but talked with him a bit on the changes to the house that had been made since then, and he shared how the street had changed.

I guess that brings up a fair point about my story- given my neighbors who have been on the street forever I know every family names that's lived here since like the 1920s, so when the guy told me his name I recognized it.
