good for you... what age, grade, level?

about 10 years ago coached some 5th-6th graders here at the y in scottsdale for 2 years. i kinda did it to throw on a resume at the time, but it turned out to be fun. the kids were cool, i let them play, and lotsa single moms too. very underrated gig actually. there's actually a good book that i don't know that i still have that was recommended to me for coaching young kids some basketball. i figured i would just know everything going in, but it was quite helpful.

Yeah, that piece was sad.

I'll be coaching kids 6-8 years old. I previously coached middle school summer basketball, which is a different kind of coaching challenge. This will be fun, with younger kids.

The Chick Fil'A mobile ordering app is a game changer. Order ahead of time, scan the table number on your phone, prop your phone against a salt shaker with a kids show. Catch your goddamn breath for a minute

My son's left testicle has died.

He acquired a virus that caused it to swell cutting off the blood flow to it and it died.

I am personally blaming my soon-to-be-ex-wife for waiting too long to take him to the doctor in the first place.

Thanks. Luckily, he can lead a perfectly normal life with just one. Apparently, they produce way more testosterone than is needed (duh). He had better be gentle with the remaining one, though.

Any advice on helping a young kiddo adjust to moving to a new house? My dude is taking it tough - much more acting out, not sleeping well, couple fits of wetting himself.

Been a tough 2 weeks with the move a week away. Feel gutted.

Has he been to the new place? Checked it out? Maybe let him (help to) repaint his new room and pick out the color and bedding and stuff. Not sure if you can get into the new place or not but familiarity is probably helpful. Maybe have a meal in the new place even if you have to sit on the floor to do it.

How old is he? Does the move involve a new school? Are there neighborhood friend he will miss? How involved was he in the process?

He’s young (3). So no school change but an end to daycare (but will get to stay with his grandparents now which is a plus).

He’s seen the place and think he genuinely likes it. Think it’s all the in between stuff that we didn’t think about until now (packing his clothes, moving his bed, taking down pictures and toys).

Have him help with the packing. Let him carry a box or two.

Also, maybe you can get him excited about a truck.

It's also a good time to introduce him to the mutability of all things.

Have Uncle Milty talk to him about coming back to PA and it not feeling like home anymore.

I realize he may not even realize why he's upset, but if he can vocalize a specific friend or place that he will miss, you could schedule a visit right now that will take place after you move in to the new place, maybe mark it prominently on a calendar or drawing paper or some other way that he'll understand that you're getting closer to that return trip to his favorite playground or whatever, and that those things will still exist after he moves, and not just closer to the day when he leaves things behind.

Oh, Gila Monsters Meet You at the Airport is an old book, but I still think a good one.

maybe a nice needlepoint wall-hanging of the serenity prayer for his new room? or tell him to man the eff up!

On a serious note, seems obvious but are you sure the move is the cause?

I moved around a lot as a kid. We stayed in the same general area, but my mom was never settled on anything. I was pretty impervious to the whole thing, but I think my brother was bothered by any sort of change. He refused to go on vacation to the beach with my grandparents, for example.

I would say don't make too much of a big deal about it. Kids are smart and very in tune with your own actions and emotions. So don't fuss over him about it. I like the idea of giving him jobs to do, having him carry boxes, etc. Have him keep a few things aside that he can take in the car with him when you make the last move. Make him feel like he's involved, like it''s happening WITH him and not TO him.

Got one too but haven’t put it together since we moved. Goddamnit

Update - my kid is psyched about the new house and we are back to normal.
