Guy that lives around the corner/dad of my daughter’s best friend is a full time firefighter for Philly. I can tell he can’t wait for people to ask him what he does for a living

Oh and the parents of her other friend are both lawyers that defend people on death row. I might as well work at Marshall’s, in my daughter’s eyes

The other day, I had a situation where I had to pick my son up at school and bring him to the office for 2 hours. While I was doing some work, ate dinner, did his homework and played some games on his chromebook. When it was time to leave he said to me, "Dad, your job is really boring." Yes, son. Yes it is and I hope that you learned a valuable lesson today and do something other than sit in an office and stare at a computer all day.

I think I'm the cool dad among my daughter's friend's dads. The bar is pretty low though.

I ran into a curious situation with a grading method. My kid has an every class quiz in pre-calc. Today he calls me pissed because his 3 point quiz netted him a 0. He had all the answer correct. I returned him to his teacher so that he could get clarification. His explanation after speaking with the teacher is that she believes that he "reasoned the answer out". His explanation is that he memorized the unit circle, which allowed to execute, but he also included reasoning to prove his answer as answers without some form of work are never accepted by math teachers.

Is the grade objective or subjective? Rote response cannot be the goal, right? My inquiry is not particularly over the 3 point value of the quiz, but in a shared understanding the expectation so that he can meet the objective. Also, I am confused by the academic basis of this particular scenario.

Am I missing something?

I always liked the objectivity of math... when the answer was correct, it was correct. I would be very frustrated. The unit circle is meant to be memorized and understood intuitively, so without knowing more info, I'm on your side.

I'd encourage your kid to show work going forward, and if it's not clear what that would entail for this set of questions, ask the teacher how to show the thought process to the teacher's satisfaction. It's an unfortunate lesson for your kid in meeting somewhere they are, not where you are. I would also discourage the student from complaining about the 3 points, as I'm guessing that would not be productive -- If the teacher is giving a student a 0 for putting the correct answer and showing no work, then I'm guessing there is a certain amount of disengagement/frustration that the teacher is experiencing. Fighting for points may trigger that.

Also, save the quizzes, and don't throw them out. You might want them for later. :/

as i mentioned last night, my 3 year old is starting to have nightmares. he goes to bed ok, like normal, but then just has a bad dream that completely freaks him out. so now my wife and i are taking turns spending 3+ hours a night in his room until we're sure he's out for a good amount of time. There are so many phases with kids, it's ridiculous

Are these nightmares, or night terrors? If the child is truly inconsolable, to the point that they may not even be hearing what you're saying, it may not be a normal nightmare.

I have had 2 kids with night terrors. That's a distressing situation the first time it happens. If you're not aware of them, I suggest reading up a bit on them. It's like sleepwalking, in the sense that they don't realize what's happening, and they are not truly awake. They happened to my kids about 2-2.5 hours into their night if they were sleep deprived. To resolve it, we would gently wake them at the 2 hour mark if we knew they were sleep deprived, and that prevented it from cropping up on those nights. They grew out of it.

My son went through that around 3. It's the worst. Able to catch some shut eye in there at least?

Yes. When it was clear he was an awful sleeper we invested in the most comfortable chair we could find and put it in his room

Sorry if already posted but have you guys heard of this momo challenge thing on YouTube? It’s basically enticing and giving your child tips on how kill themsleves.

Had to talk to my kids today about it and luckily they haven’t seen it.
