I've had a pain in my right foot for over a month, I should probably consult my physician. It feels like it's just a muscle strain, but it doesn't hurt when I go on the rare jog, it's more of a morning or while walking annoyance.

You're right, I just need to jog EVERYWHERE. I'll finally get back in shape, and my foot won't hurt. Of course, I'm sure everything else will hurt.

No change in shoes, no noticeable deterioration in any shoes I wear regularly.

I had something that sounded quite similar. Once I got jogging, hiking or snowboarding the pain would subside. For me I believe it was a calf problem. They were way too tense. Have someone massage your calves and if just minimal pressure causes a large amount of pain, that's probably it. It took me about a month of massages at least every other day to work it out to a manageable level and about 4 months for that pain to be totally gone. You can probably do some stretching too.

Foot pain that subsides with exercise is generally associated with tendinitis. Pain in the the arch or heel that's most severe in the morning will often be plantar fasciitis, but it would be unusual for that to disappear when running. Could also be a bone bruise, a small muscle strain, or an incipient stress fracture (stress reaction).

So, lots of possibilities, with different treatments, so you should probably get it checked out by a sports medicine guy.

If you want to do some home treatment, though, increasing the blood flow to the area, and perhaps breaking down some scarring through massage (a lacrosse ball is good for this, or there are various sorts of rollers) can't hurt. Well, it hurts, but in a way that helps. Can also use alternating ice with heat to increase blood flow. anti-inflammatories can reduce swelling, of course, and sometimes that's the cause of the pain. But I hesitate to recommend them if there's a possibility they mask the pain and lead you to cause further damage, which can happen without a good diagnosis.

Could be gout. Or pseudo gout. (That's actually a thing though it seems every disease should get its own name.)

I'm just going to amputate, to be safe.
