Hail to the Thief: A Politics Thread

emailed the older man who unfollowed asking if he thinks everyone should have health care in this country. he was upset with his high premium, which is understandable. he said he wanted it gone and back to the way it was.

he replied with this

Yes, if what you mean by that is that everyone has access to healthcare when needed. The truly poor would have access thru the the welfare system (and that must be reworked so there are incentives to work, and thus get off the welfare rolls). Institutional, multigenerational welfare dependence is a disgrace to our nation. Unemployment is the root of the problem (after the breakdown of the family in America). The problem has only grown (greatly) in the last 8 years. We need new approaches.

any good lectures on youtube regarding poverty and welfare? maybe a go to article? or just some help thoughtfully responding?

Supporting him isn't going to cause some sudden uprise in the voting ranks.

Curtailing some of Trump's worst impulses could keep liberal turnout lower than it otherwise will be in '18 and '20.

this is a pretty succinct post. it's 1.5 years old but stays fairly true. most people on 'welfare' (are we talking TANF, SNAP, Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, what?) are children, elderly, disabled or working..

RichmondPhilsFan wrote:There was an article in the WaPo this weekend about a woman in Williamsport who went from being a diehard conservative to supporting Hillary and attending the DC march this weekend. Needless to say, she's pretty isolated from similar thinkers where she lives. What was really uplifting about the story was how she came to this decision on her own despite having a pretty tough life.

Soren, have her read the article. It might give her strength despite her coworkers' nonsense. https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/social-issues/shes-54-white-rural-and-a-lifelong-republican-why-is-she-protesting-donald-trump/2017/01/21/6457ac02-df41-11e6-918c-99ede3c8cafa_story.html

This struck me:

She took a seat near the front of the bus and watched Ashley, who was in charge of their bus, begin counting heads and making announcements. And then a woman with curly red hair and glasses appeared at the top of the stairs.

“I have some information about the League of Women Voters. We are starting a chapter in Lycoming County. I brought a few paper applications,” she said. “Does anyone want information about League of Women Voters?”

Barr, who had never signed up for anything like that before and had never heard of the League of Women Voters, watched as the woman stopped in front of her.

In that moment, Barr had yet to carry a protest sign miles from the bus to the Mall. She had yet to stand before the Trump International Hotel and, quietly at first, then louder, chant words of protest. She had yet to witness crowds bigger than any in her life, crowds that didn’t scare her nearly as much as she thought they would. And she had yet to realize that what she was most afraid of was returning to Williamsport and falling into a rut that this time she would not be able to pull herself out of.

At that moment on the bus, there was just the woman standing in front of her, holding information packets about the women’s voting group, asking, “Do you want one?”

There was a long pause.

“Sure,” Barr said. “I’ll take one.”

edit: Dinesh D'Souza read it and called her a lesbian. So that's a takeaway.

challenge him on this perceptual delusion, Calvin. Because he's one deluded fucknut. "Back the way it was" was sucking for him, hard. He's merely too stupid to understand it. He's been hard-trolled by reactionary imbeciles. Insist he quantify his high premiums - and coverage - now VS his premiums - and coverage - when everything was so great for him. He can't, and/or won't, because that would cause him to choke on thee propaganda he's swallowed.

I am SICK of morons who look around, and imagine that people mostly like THEM are the problem, rather than looking "up" at the tiny fraction of people who have arrogated WAY more than their share and saying "hey, what the fuck"

listening to drumpf talk about the economy and regulations, what an imbecile

"we're gonna cut 75% of regulations" is less than meaningless & serves only to highlight how profoundly ignorant he is

And make sure that he isolates any external factors--such as the fact that he is now eight years older, so is in a much higher risk pool and likely has additional health problems. In other words, paying $100 more per month when you're, e.g., 60 versus 52 isn't an ACA issue, it's a life issue.

a good way to know if a bill is pretty bad is if Louie Gohmert and Steve King are co-sponsoring it

took a quick look and there's a lot of death tax this and obamacare that and IRS this and Israel that being introduced. i also noticed a bill introduced by Virginia Foxx via the Way and Means committee to agree to raise the debt ceiling. she, and most of the others co-sponsoring it, voted against raising the debt ceiling in 2011.

gonna be a long 2 years

There's got to be a strategy that can sow discord among Republicans on the debt ceiling thing. Maybe people like me who live in deep red states and districts can troll our Reps and Sens about it.

A lot of "conservatives" think that was a result of government forcing lazy and/or dishonest people to buy houses. Seriously.
