Standing Up-type Comedy

Postby Houshphandzadeh » Wed Jan 07, 2009 10:44:40

I got free tickets to a show by Doug Stanhope a while ago. I had never heard of him and thought it would be terrible but it was probably the best I had ever seen, even better than Chapelle in 02.

Was that the guy who was on the second run of The Man Show?

Could be, now that you mention it, I didn't know anything about him going in. I don't think most of his act could be played or would work even on a Cable channel.

edit: i don't mean his act like that wasn't him on the man show, i mean the act i saw couldn't go on tv

I watched Stanhope's Special(I think it was on HBO). I laughed more than I have at any of the Rock, Carlin, Maher, etc. specials.

I was kind of surprised too. He wasn't that funny on the Man Show but when he is allowed to expand his vocabulary he is pretty freakin funny.
Do it again!

I don't know if this is true for Stanhope, but I can't get over how many comedians have that one special or album that is just punch you in the gut funny. I swear I never laughed so hard than at an Anthony Clark stand up from back in the 90's (three sitcoms ago). The set was genius, even if he isn't.

yeah, so I don't get why Demtri Martin is funny? It's like he saw Mitch Hedberg, stripped his act of the funny parts and natural charisma, and added Carrot Top to it.

And now he has a show. Mencia II

Yeah, really, how is Demtri Martin anything like Hedberg?

Fine. You wanna act like you're two? I'll act like I'm one.

demtri martin is funny, but i don't find him to be as gut-busting, side-splitting; murder your wife and children while laughing hysterically-funny as alot of people i know seem to.

i think hedburg was awesome. RIP

yeah, one-liners and all, but Hedberg's are straight observational wit and Martin's are pretty fantastical; everything's got some kind of spin on it. Hedberg was hilarious but Martin's more creative with his style.

yeah, he's definitely got a different spin than any other comedian i've seen.

plus he seems to have a whole hipster/scenester thing about him that i bet make wannabe hipster/scenesters think they're supposed to like him. kinda like frat dbags and dane cook? just an observation

I love the shot Hicks takes at Denis Leary here.
