PIZZA is the New Orange

Porta on Chestnut St is the 3rd location of this Italian Restaurant / Pizzeria - the original is in the former location of The Student Prince in Asbury Park, where Bruce met Clarence.

The Philly location is a huge two-story former furniture store, the biggest pizzeria in Philly.

The Neapolitan pizzas there are excellent, if not quite as magical as Capofitto or Vetri.

BIGA Pizza & Beer in Bryn Mawr is a great spot for Neapolitan pizza. Tried four different ones last night, every one was a winner.

The crust is excellent, typical puffy charred cooks-in-90-seconds stuff. Not better than Vetri or Capofitto but a pretty ideal vehicle for the toppings.

The red sauce is vibrant, the specialty pizzas are especially well chosen and balanced in flavors and textures.

On bad pizza, you sprinkle on grated cheese, oregano, garlic powder, pepper flakes, etc to get some flavor.

On good pizza I sprinkle on salt because well salt makes everything better.

On great pizza - like this - there is no need to enhance. On a Wednesday night, no waiting for a table, either. Happy Hour drink prices until 6pm.

I went there for the first time a few weeks ago and agree that it was quite good. Will definitely go back.

Finally made it to Brigantessa on Passyunk Ave for a pre-Flyers meal.

The Stella pizza was tiny but wonderful - and I'm not especially fond of ricotta on pizza. We also had a pasta dish that was delicious but very salty. I loved it, but it was over-salted for most humans.

Two slices with pepperoni. I wasn't going to eat the crust, so as to not feel stuffed, but it was delicious

Wasn't sure whether to post here or in the obits thread:

Capofitto was the best Neapolitan in Philly, now closed. That fire in Old City ruined them financially.

Bufad made good Neapolitans and some square pan pizza - but closing.

BIGA Pizza and Beer, easily the best pie on the Main Line, closes Dec 29.

Still plenty of great pizza in the region, but shows just how hard the restuarant biz must be.

Those are some big ones. Never really liked bufad, especially with Vetri just a few blocks away.

I liked Bufad, but agree that it was not in the same league as Vetri.

Fifteen years ago, it would have been the second best pizza in Philly. A real sign of the Pizza Renaissance that we can shrug at Bufad's closing.

Anyone heard anything about the Angelo's Pizzeria opening in the old Sarcone's Deli spot in South Philly. Last I can find is Michael Klein note tht it is opening "soon" in september. Has two google reviews, but I think they've mistaken the location.

Angelo's was Danny Digiampietro's spot in Haddonfield where they made absolutely fantastic pizza (even if they did frequently run out or get behind).. Decided to expand to Philly when the Sarcone's spot opened up, at which point of course they then lost their lease in Haddonfield. walked by 9th and Fitzwater New Year's eve, and didn't see any signs of life.

Edit: Ah, per the twitters and instagram from 7 days ago: "All the rest of the equipment getting delivered today...this nightmare is coming to an end. The tide is coming in." Plan to open "some time after new Year's"

definitely worth checking out when and if they arrive.
