Not a ton of smugness after the intoxicating line. Too bad.

He stuck with the baseball decision story. I'm convinced he was told they weren't going to be going past the budget he was given, and he thought it was best to trade Lee and get prospects rather than getting nothing for Blanton. Time will tell on the decision.

I sort of want to see them start over with Aumont as a starter in lowball and try to get him so his labra (labrii?) won't simultaneously explode due to poor mechanics. Can always switch him back and have him caveman it out of the pen after that

When I was out before Missanelli said he was going to ask Monty if the owners would have been in the red if they pushed payroll to $150 mil

The explanation he gave makes perfect sense really. If it was a budget issue, they could have easily just unloaded Blanton somewhere for whatever they could get. They didn't want to clean house of all their prospects for one super year of Halladay-Lee. I personally would have been too tempted to do that, but it would have been stupid to do if you want to be GM past next year.

Giles/Montgomery, speaking for the owners, always maintain that they (at best) break even in any given year, and often lose up to $20M in a year. They've been claiming this for years.

I'm sure it's an accounting trick.

I remember when Norman Braman owned the Eagles, he claimed (probably honestly, in the strictest sense), that the Eagles corporation either only broke even or even lost money. Of course, he also paid himself an annual salary of like $6M, IIRC, as the owner.

Even if the Phillies owners only take dividends on the value of the asset since they've purchased it, they've made a TON of money.

They may be "losing" money each year in terms of their expenses being bigger than their cash receipts. But the unrealized appreciation of their investment is where it's all at along with the distributions they all invariably take on a year-to-year basis.

That franchise is appreciating in value every year and its not even funny. Their brand, for example, has exploded.

The somewhat sad thing is, had they spent an extra $2.5M in the draft this past summer on Susac and Stewart, they'd have already injected replacements in the system for Taylor and D'Arnaud, and they wouldn't have had to dump Cliff Lee.

I agree with the reasoning. If they wanted to go "all-in," the time to do it would've been in July when they would've had two pennant chases before the contracts expired--not one.

I thought there were two option years, but evidently there's only one and man, does he have to do a lot to get it to vest automatically. I mean, it makes sense, it's a 20M option.

3 years/$60M (2011-13), plus 2014 option

* signed extension with Philadelphia 12/16/09
* 11:$20M, 12:$20M, 13:$20M, 14:$20M option
* 2014 option guaranteed with all of the following:
o 225 IP in 2013,
o 415 IP in 2012-13, and
o Halladay is not on disabled list at end of 2013 season

Also worth noting (unless this info was simply not released yet) is that it says nothing about a no trade clause.
