Still not buying that drabek is going. And I just don't see any good reason why he's using lee in a straight salary dump, when he could do the same with blanton.

And with Blanton a free agent at the end of the year they will not offer arbitration to him as he may accept it so he is walking, no picks for him. It's only a difference of $2M between the two this year but you would also have Lee over Blanton for the entire year AND two draft picks at the end. Blanton would have had to have brought back at least one usable reliever or something. WTF?

I think you are missing the point though. Aumont and Ramirez are worse than Drabek, at least from my understanding.

So the end result of both trades, assuming the names are basically right
Carasco, Marson, Donald, Knapp, Drabek, Taylor and D'Arnaud

For 1/2 year of Lee, 4 of Halladay, Ben Fransisco, Aumont, Gillies and someone else.

It's not a straight salary dump. It's partially that, and partially Ruben trying to rebuild the farm from him overpaying for Halladay because he wants him so badly, and needs the extra $6 mil from Toronto to make his budget work.

yeah well, I don't buy the desperate for halladay argument either. But fuck it, I've said my piece on that.

Just checked on beerleaguer and weitzel raised an interesting possibility. If it is too seperate deals, and they have an offer on the table from seattle, they may look for other offers during their 72 hour window. That does sound plausible, and makes me wonder whether the deal may still not happen - as the deadline looms, rube looks up at what he's getting back for lee and decides the deal isn't worth it, and he'll take his chances with halladay and free agency. Rube has form on making that kind of decision. Could see him doing it again.

The Yankees were interested in Lee, but the asking price from the Phillies was stud prospect Jesus Montero, Joba Chamberlain or Phil Hughes and several prospects.

OK, that's better. But that's a huge difference from what we are purportedly getting from the Ms.

Really. If that was our asking price to one team why is this asking price so much worse?

Aren't we "trading" a year of Lee in this as well?

They must REALLY like these Seattle prospects, if that's what they asked for from another team. I think I'd take any 1 of those guys over all 3 of the ones we're getting.

I'm saying they shopped Lee and this is the preferred package. I don't know.

What else are we to assume? That Ruben didn't bother trying to do better?

Why not give the Angels a try? or the Rangers (though they may be cash strapped).

You think they called the Yankees but not LA or Texas?

One of the overriding themes seems to be that the Rube is terrified of going to arbitration. For an organization that is like 17-1 in arbitration this seems a little odd to me. Its going to be tough to generate extra draft picks that way.

Is this a panic move because the Angels lost Lackey and the Angels were preparing to come in with a new Halladay offer?

"Trying to do better" would mean waiting as long as possible to trade Lee rather than arbitrarily settling on December 15. They could get this package from Seattle (or an equivalent package from another team) at any time. There's zero reason to do it now.

I wish there was some way a message could be relayed to Amaro that he can get a lot better prospects than what these Seattle fuckers are giving them.
