but according to one source: "Don't rule out them including Cole Hamels" in a potential deal.

Halladay, who has a no-trade clause in his contract, is said to be pushing hard for the Blue Jays to trade him to the Phillies, whose Clearwater spring training site is 15 minutes from his home in Oldsmar, Fla.

it is gonna happen.

but I am getting a teansy bit anxious about losing Blanton and Happ to allow this to happen. And in 2011 you could lose Lee and Halladay, so hopefully they'd lock one of them up.

WIN NOW!!!!!!!!

Really hope this is true. The more leverage, the better.

if halladay is pushing to move to here, and we don't sort this out, smug can go fuck himself. I will not be pleased. This is far too good an opportunity to pass up, and it seems like we get more leverage with every passing day.

Think they can add 5k more seats to CBP by opening day after we trade for Halladay to accommodate the absurd demand there will be for tickets?

Hi Wiz!
Not when you consider salaries, losing Brown or Taylor + another prospect, and losing one of Lee and Halladay next offseason.

I think they should raise ticket prices more in the lower level.

I think the hit on Moyer evens out salaries to some degree

Agreed. Unless you think that someone is going to make a pre-emptive offer (and there's no sign of it), time is on their side.

Don't we have 5 owners? Can't Monty pass the hat around, ask them for 3 mil extra a piece, tell them we'll win the NL for a third straight year and basically guarantee this Phillies team catapults the Phils to 1B status with the Eagles in town for the near future?

Come on rich people. Don't get hung up on the salary aspects here. It's one year.

Oh, I'm not questioning that. This can wait until the day before spring training, for all I care. I just want it sorted and halladay in red pinstripes.

In effect, that's what he'd be asking the owners to do since Halladay's salary would come out of their profits.

I dont think Toronto can wait more than a few weeks. Their leverage is highest now when there are multiple teams with money in the mix. The longer they wait, the more free agents sign, the less money there is for Halladay. The Angels need a pitcher and aren't going to wait until Feb. to get one (unless they dont have a choice). If Lackey's market starts to move and the Angels need to make a play, it may take them out of the Halladay running. The Phillies are in unique position in that they don't need Halladay, so they can afford to wait it out, but Toronto really cant if it wants to get the best deal.

6:01am: Mark Feinsand of The NY Daily News spoke to a source who said "Don't rule out them including Cole Hamels" in a potential Halladay deal. I'm not sure it's wise for Philly to sell low on Hamels for only one year of Halladay, but that would be something.

4:47am: Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com says that the Angels and Phillies have emerged as the frontrunners in the Roy Halladay sweepstakes. Philadelphia is prepared to offer a package that will likely include J.A. Happ, plus either Michael Taylor or Domonic Brown. Echoing a report from yesterday, Rosenthal says the Angels offered Joe Saunders, Erick Aybar, and Peter Bourjos to the Blue Jays.

Halladay will likely require a contract extension in exchange for waiving his no-trade clause according to Rosenthal, and the Phillies would almost certainly have to make another move to fit Halladay into the payroll. Joe Blanton is a prime candidate to be that sacrificial lamb. Meanwhile, the Angels are trying to re-sign John Lackey, and could withdraw from the Halladay pursuit if he returns.

Trading Hamels would be silly. I don't buy it.

If what stark says is true, that the jays would consider taking a veteran if he fit (mentioning Juan rivera as an example). Would it be unreasonable to think of adding Vic to the package? Happ, Vic and 2nd tier prospect or low (A) level prospect?

If the front office is not set on handing Taylor the starting RF job right away, we can surely live with Francisco as the starting CF and hitting in the vacated 7th hole. Mayberry could be elevated to 4th OF for the time being.

I don't think we'd lose too much (collectively) offensively. They could still move Blanton for more salary relief too if necessary.

We really do have a glut of OFs. As much as it pains me to say it, Werth would have to be in play too. He'll probably be a type A after 2010 (I'm guessing), he's incredibly cheap ($7M), and... wait, that would be dumb. That would be a sideways move, even Werth for Halladay straight up. We'd be paying 8 million extra in salary to go from a 5 win player to a 7 win player. I suppose our replacement OFs are more valuable than our replacement starting pitchers, but that still doesn't make a ton of sense.
