Unless it's not.

Right, but you already seem resigned to the fact. I think it's extremely likely these are last ditch efforts by JPR, and that these are the rumors he leaked, unlike that retarded Mets story.

And you seem ready to call every rumor posturing, planted by Riccardi, even when it's from a former Red Sox beat writer.

You could be right and I pray that you are. Neither of us knows. But I'm not willing to buy in to the view that Riccardi has to trade Halladay, has no alternative to the Phils and, even if he did, would necessarily give the Phils a chance to top any other offer. That's a bit too Pollyanna for my tastes.

And, as far as waiting until we get all the facts, you never get all the facts. You always deal with imperfect information. If someone else swoops in with another deal, we likely won't know much until it's too late. It's like with Tony Soprano: You never see it coming.

My confidence in this deal happening or not seems to be entirely unconnected to any news development or other factor. But for whatever reason, right now I'm feeling like it will get done: Halladay will be a Phillies.

The problem is the waiting. Amaro could try to push the matter by sweetening his core offer to Drabek plus Taylor, or Drabek plus Happ plus Gose (yes, I've cracked on including Drabek so long as we get to keep Brown), and say that it comes off the table as soon as Halladay throws his first warmup pitch Wednesday. But that's an obvious bluff--at least it would be if I were making it--and would weaken our position going forward. So holding steady is the best approach right now.

J, I know. But I haven't called everything a rumor, and the one time I did (Angels deal), every writer confirmed that was so.

There's really nothing to go on, just seems you're connecting the dots with very little info, and i"m just pointing out there's other scenarios as well. You've just seemed so certain this whole time b/c of that one deal you know about

Game over - get Beeston on the phone and tell him to send JPR off to bed. Let's get this thing done. We're their only option.

i've brought myself to a place where i'll be happy whether they get him or not. as a big follower of the minors, it's pretty kickass that they have the best system of my lifetime. i won't be crying if they go into next season with drabek/taylor/brown/knapp all representing the phillies yet. people can bitch all they want about going for it now and saying the prospects not might pan out such as the santana deal, but prospects do pan out and play a huge role a lot of the time. i wonder if the mariners would prefer bedard on their dl or adam jones in their outfield, sherrill in their bullpen and tillman knocking on the door?

i've always thought it was the phillies or bust. nobody else is going to get him. there's a reason that jpr called the phillies a few days before going public with his halladay talk. i think rube knows and is doing his job nicely. they don't halladay, take it to the last minute. the jays can't keep him past the 31st.

Oh are we going to get into an "I" versus "they" discussion? If it makes you feel better, "If I were the general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies professional baseball club I would not trade Kyle Drabek AND $10 million even if I could do so". Better?

* Sure. Thanks.

If that rumor about Boston was floated by Toronto... isn't that the fourth stage of death? Halladay for Bruntlett, Mayberry, Lopez, and Walker.
