Halladay VI: Smug-Off For the Ages Sponsored by lightsout54

Well, maybe Shane should keep his mouth shut, but if you were in his position, you'd feel exactly the same way.

And I suspect the reporter prodded Shane and Jimmy a little, much like Cole Hamels's radio interview a few months ago.

Yeah, that'll help Shane.

That's completely uncalled for. To say something trite like, "Yeah, I'd like to improve our team" is fine. He continued on far too long even after that quote and basically threw Happ under the bus. Just play the game and leave those decisions up to the general manager. Victorino probably doesn't care about the future of the team because he plans on leaving for more money down the line anyway. I hope Victorino gets offered in a package along with the prospects to the lowly D'Backs for Haren. Let's see what he says then.

Shortstop Jimmy Rollins said basically the same thing last Saturday, suggesting management should go get the Toronto right-hander "almost regardless of what the asking price is."

New trade proposal: Victorino and Rollins for Halladay and Scutaro. "They said to do it regardless of the price."

Ahahahaha. That would be pretty sick.

kenrosenthal wrote:--After their latest round of meetings, Toronto officials are more dug in than ever that they should receive an elite package for Roy Halladay or they will simply wait until the offseason again.

--Toronto officials are insistent that they must get Kyle Drabek as part of a trade with Philadelphia. They really like both outfielder Dominic Brown and pitcher Jason Knapp. But both of them are at A-ball and Knapp has had shoulder problems. The Jays see too much risk in that group while Drabek already is thriving at High-A. They would not substitute J.A. Happ for Drabek because Happ does not pass one of their litmus tests: Do you imagine in a year you will want to sign him to a long-term contract? The Jays think that is possible with Drabek. They view Happ more as a middle-to-back-of-the-rotation starter.

As a way to exemplify how problematic trading for prospects are and why they want to target specific youngsters they like the most, Jays officials have noted that last year when it came to CC Sabathia the Phillies made Carlos Carasco and Lou Marson unavailable. Now those two have moved up to Triple-A, their performance has dipped and they are players being offered as secondary parts for Halladay.

--Jays officials are trying to sell interested teams on this view of Halladay: If you obtain him now you get Halladay for two pennant races plus even if you don't sign him to a long-term contract you can offer arbitration and gain two compensation draft picks. Toronto sees those draft picks as extra pieces that an acquiring team can obtain and, thus, should pay for in a trade now, too.

--Jays officials are telling other clubs that they are determined not to feel pressured to trade an ace in the way they perceive Minnesota was in dealing Johan Santana Johan Santana and, thus, accept an inferior offer just to be done with the matter.

--The Phillies remain the frontrunner, but there is potential to complete deals with at least the Red Sox and Rangers New York Rangers , too.

--At the moment, if they deal with Philadelphia, Toronto has said it wants Happ, too, in addition to Drabek because the Jays want to be able to put someone on the roster immediately who is part of this kind of trade. But if Philadelphia is willing to give up Drabek, the Jays might relent on Happ.

This news can only be considered great. It sounds to me like, if Amaro, on Thursday, after Halladay has started for the Blue Jays again and things are getting desperate, offers Drabek, Carrasco, Donald, and Marson, we could have a deal.

That would be a major win for the Phillies.

If they need a major league ready arm, throw Lopez in the deal. I'm also a bit nervous about having both Carrasco and Drabeck in the deal. I know Carrasco has regressed, but who else do we have that's only a year or so away (in case of injury, etc.)? Savery? I guess if we keep Happ it's not as much of an issue.
