This news can only be considered great. It sounds to me like, if Amaro, on Thursday, after Halladay has started for the Blue Jays again and things are getting desperate, offers Drabek, Carrasco, Donald, and Marson, we could have a deal.

That would be a major win for the Phillies.

If they need a major league ready arm, throw Lopez in the deal. I'm also a bit nervous about having both Carrasco and Drabeck in the deal. I know Carrasco has regressed, but who else do we have that's only a year or so away (in case of injury, etc.)? Savery? I guess if we keep Happ it's not as much of an issue.

If you keep Happ, you can deal Carrasco. The point is to keep 2/3 of Taylor, Brown, and Drabek; I don't think you can prioritize WHICH two you want to keep if you can indeed keep two. If Drabek + others will get it done (and this makes it sound like it just might), you've got to pull the trigger.

Just as an exercise, I think it would be interesting to negotiate this way:

--JP starts by naming a Phillie he wants among any big-league rookie and prospect in the system.

--Ruben then picks among the same pool one player whom the Jays can't have.

--JP goes again

--Ruben goes again

This continues until Toronto has four players in a package for Halladay, or five if it's Halladay plus another useful part. (In this variant, maybe Ruben gets to protect two or three more guys before JP picks the fifth player.) A variant might be that each GM gets to select two at a time.

For one thing, this might reveal if the two teams see eye-to-eye in terms of valuing the Phils' prospects. For me, the top eight go: Drabek, Brown, Taylor, Happ, Marson, Carrasco, D'Arnaud, Gose. But presumably the Jays' needs would leave us (at least) one of the two catchers, and they might put Donald in there.

Almost certainly in this scenario we'd lose Drabek or Brown, but get to keep the other. And at this point that's all I'm focusing on--save one of those two guys, and get Halladay.
