R.I.P. Harry Kalas: 1936-2009

This is how I feel. I grew up hiding my radio under my pillow for west coast trips and listening to Harry and Whitey call the games. Their rapport was the best, sometimes making me laugh so much that tears came down my face. Today, the tears aren't from laughter.

RIP, Harry.

I wasn't prepared for this at all. The next few days and the entire baseball season are just going to seem wrong.

RIP. A big part of our lives will be missed. I can't even imagine the amount of hours most of us have heard his voice.

I used to do the trivia question all the time back when you could respond and win free tickets. I remember the first time I won, I was 14 years old, and I ran around the house like a nut, because Harry said my name on tv. Winning the tickets was such an after thought.

Hell, it happened to me when I was 27, and my reaction was damn near the same.

I was in grad school in NH when Whitey died, but I happened to be in PA for his last game, a great game against the Mets. Yesterday's game was equally thrilling. No surprise they both went out on top.

I agree with whoever said they should have silence for today's broadcast. They could make an announcement once in a while to say why there's silence, but let the fans enjoy the game and remember what used to fill that silence.

Harry's still talking lovingly of Scott is one of the main reasons I never held any ill will against Scott.

considering all of his ailments, it was likely a heart attack, but nothing's been mentioned

This is such a sad day.

After a game during the last year of Jack Russell Stadium in Clearwater, my friend and I went up to the broadcast booth to try to get Harry's autograph. But my friend saw that the people in front of us handed him a cell phone and he did whatever they asked him to do with it. So my friend decides to call another friend of ours and gets him on the phone just as we approach Harry in the booth.

After Harry talked to us for a few seconds and signed our programs, my friend handed him the phone and asked Harry if he could just talk to our friend for a bit. Harry says, "Sure, what's your friend's name?" We tell him that it's Jim and Harry takes the phone and all we hear is something like this:

"Hey, Jim, this is Harry Kalas. How are you?...Watching the NCAA Tournament, eh?...Well, take care, Jim. It's getting late so I am outta heerrrrre!"

We again shook Harry's hand and thanked him. This is what our friend on the other end says: "That...was...awesome. I gotta call my dad."

I just sent that friend a text message saying I was thinking about that time. In his reply, he said "...that's how cool Harry was. It's like a small piece of my life is gone."

We will miss you, Harry.

RIP

Listening to Larry and others on the radio is so sad, you can hear them choking back the tears.

One of my greatest memories will always be his speech returning after 9-11. I thought it was every bit, if not better than, Jack Buck's, the speech that got all the attention. Throw his HR calls of Scott going yard on Maddux, and it was a story book return to baseball.

"From the cradle of liberty, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania....."

I'm crying typing that.

I can't add anything thathasn't already been said. I'm 42 and never knew a summer where Harry wasn't calling a game The quote that said "my childhood ended today" is an apt observation.

I've been spoiled by his presence for so long. He will be missed. RIP Harry.

Does anyone have the HR call on Matt Stairs from Sunday?

Franzke telling stories about how much he loved the fans, how he'd continue to do requests for fans' answering machine messages even though he didn't have to....

i've heard a bunch of stories about him recording wedding reception intros, too. always wish i had thought of that.

I know of 2 people who Harry did that for. Neither of them knew him personally, they sent him a request and he obliged.

Damn. I wish I'd thought of that.
