R.I.P. Harry Kalas: 1936-2009

Postby Barry Jive » Mon Apr 13, 2009 15:37:18

I found out at work, from a message from a street sergeant. I was done work about 10 minutes later. I got about 15 texts in the next five minutes. I sat silently on the El ride home. Then I watched the "High Hopes" video and cried more than I've ever cried for someone I've never met.

I just can't believe I'll never hear his voice again.
no offense but you are everything that's wrong with America

Everything that I'm feeling has already been said. It's like losing a family member and a big piece of your childhood. It's sickening, way too sudden and way too soon.

Nice tribute banner.

McCarthy says Harry's health was at a point where his mission was to just get to spring training

Site hasn't peaked over 110 users. Would have been nice to memorialize today by breaking the 124 record for a pretty useless date (I think it was a draft day or something).

Watching the game is actually comforting. . .like it always is when something bad happens

i just remembered something from this year's phillies winter tour stop in reading. my dad was asked to sing the national anthem (it's kind of become a running joke, since he forgot the words while singing before a game a few years ago) before the speakers started. from my vantage point, i saw harry and then my dad, and they were basically singing together. it was a really cool moment: my dad and the Legend.

i have a picture of harry and me on my facebook page. the thing that stands out to me is that he put his arm around me. that might not seem like a big deal, but whenever i get pictures with celebrities, it's always very awkward: do i touch them, do they touch me, etc. i heard jerry seinfeld say, "we don't know eachother, we don't have to touch." regarding photos with fans. not harry. he grabbed me and pulled me closer to him. that meant a lot.

If Chase Utley speaks at Harry's memorial, he should say...

Harry Kalas, YOU ARE THE MAN

I think they said he didn't

Mentioned in the PBP thread, LA said there were some bad omens with Harry over the last few days. He wasn't in the back row on the plane like he always was, and he didn't tell LA that his favorite ump C.B. Bucknor was in Colorado doing the series...

Shane pointed to the booth during his HR and Scott/LA got choked up

well that's ridiculous, because he had one from 1980.

wow. i had to stop at office during work and decided to check espn like i normally do if i get a few minutes and was stunned when i saw the headline on the sidebar of espn. i literally started shaking so much the cursor just moved from one side of the screen to the other for quite a while.

for this 23 year old lifelong fan i have never known any other voice and i think it is special that those on here 40 and younger can say the same thing. when whitey passed away i was merely a kid who couldn't fully grasp the situation. it took 12 years for me to realize what that day in 1997 meant. i'll miss those summer nights as i typed away here on back she goes when i whipped around as harry shouted "well hit" or "long drive" only to see the outfielder catch it just shy of the warning track. admit it, that was part of the charm. there's a reason i flipped on the radio at end of game five of the nlcs and that reason was to hear harry kalas make the call that i had longed to hear for such a long time. really, it was that call that i lived for. how special is it that we got to hear him crown us as the world champions of baseball once again before he left? harry might be gone, but i know when the phillies hit a homerun i'll think "outta here" for the rest of my life.
