R.I.P. Harry Kalas: 1936-2009

Whether McCarthy, Franzke or, hopefully, Scott Graham is the next PBP guy, would they please bring Larry Andersen back to TV? I can't believe how much I miss him - he had to be banished to radio only for me to find out how good he is.

It's my first day back from a week's vacation so it's especially difficult for me. Have something I have to get done by 6 and am barely started on it.

God damn. Grannywiz has been over with us for easter, and she doesnae roll with a mobile phone, so I can't

(paused for the moment of silence)
tell her till she touches down in dubberlin.

As someone who never grew up in Philadelphia, I can't say Harry was the voice of my childhood. For a while all I knew of him was that he broadcast with Whitey, and, well, there was a picture of whitey that had been up in my ma's room for god knows how long (still there), so that was good enough for me.

When you're removed from the hearing of the voice, day to day, it takes on a different kind of importance. Just to hear him on the radio over the internet back in 99 or 2000 was a big thing for me. I hated it when the other network was doing the coverage of that game (cos, you know, in those days you didn't get to choose). And I loved that drawl.

I have a memory of painting my bedroom in brixton, London on a hot summer and shouting out the window when we won, against the marlins, I think. Harry was calling that, I'm sure. It was a pretty happy time in my life, and an important one to me, and he's there as part of it. We'll always have 2008. And Monkeywiz got to hear him when he was only a couple of weeks old cos I watched games with him on my lap.

I've been thinking a lot about mortality and dying since the wee man was born, and I am firm in the belief when it's over, we're done, and all that lives on is what you've done in your life. Harry has spoken to so many over the years, and he will be an integral part of a glorious cathedral of memories. A vast span of places and people - what's been posted on here is just a brief glimpse of the places his voice has been and always will be. For as long as someone alive remembers where they were when they heard harry say something, anything, about the Phils. I do not think you could ask for much more than that, and I think that gallery of location and time is the best possible tribute to one of our most important voices.

So long harry.

I never post from work because BSG is blocked here, but I had to login from my phone for this. This is the closest I've ever come to crying at work. People who know me know that baseball is very important to me. Harry's as big a reason as any. One of the greatest public figures in Philadelphia history, he made those awful years from '87-92 and '94-2000 thoroughly enjoyable for me. Wiping away tears here. Rest in peace, Harry.

It's interesting to read some of the comments from other non-local websites. For many, they knew Harry as the "Voice of God" from NFL Films not as the Phils broadcaster.

last year, when we won the series, i was there in person. so i didn't hear harry's call for a while. the next day i was driving to NJ for work (long drive) and i heard it on the radio. i almost had to pull off the road because i was crying so hard. even though i saw it in person, it wasn't real until harry told me.

this is going to be rough. yeah, he wasn't the greatest at calling everything right anymore, but his voice was still just amazing.

hope you and whitey are sharing a few brews and a cigar or two, wherever you're at.

Did Harry do NFL football games for Westwood One this past season? I remember hoping he would be assigned the Eagles-Giants playoff game, but he wasn't.
