Great title.

And re doc/Glenn: it’s Zumoff’s world and Glenn is just living in it, partner.

spike and billy king went back and forth on doc's potential impact

the link's broken for me now

apparently howard tweeted that he agrees with his son (which apparently doesn't happen frequently) that doc will have minimal impact because the problems are higher up in the organization.
Not everything I think is something I should say.

Coach definitely matters a lot less than the roster the front office gives him.

That’s true, but look at recent champs/contenders:

Do the Heat make it this year without Spo?
Do the Raptors win it all last year (or even make the finals) without Nurse?
Kerr inherited Jackson’s team and immediately went to five finals and won three.
Lue is credited as a big reason the Cavs came back from their deficit.
The Bucks sprang up as soon as Bud came in and changed their play style.
Do the Celtics play in three of the last four conference finals if Stevens isn’t their coach?
Pop got teams to outperform expectations for years after their heyday was over.

Even further back, the Kobe/Shaq Lakers disappointed in their first three seasons together and then three-peated when Phil came on board.

Good and bad coaches make a difference even though the number one driver of success/failure will always be the players on the court.

Glenn probably doesn't play Horford at the 4 for 40 games

He'd probably play Tobi at his natural position of 4 where he was actually good at

But don't those last two posts -- which I agree with in isolation -- support Spike's point?

It's chicken or egg for a lot of the examples in the league. Was it the coach that made a player a top guy, or did the top player lift the coach to make it seem like they had more impact then they really did? If Vogel was our coach do we get out of the 1st round this season?

Do the Lakers win the title with Brett Brown as their coach this year? I am sure the answer is somewhere in the middle but at least with Doc there can't be anymore blaming the coach if the team underachieves.

Well at this point we're interpreting mtcal's interpretation of something that interpreted Howard Eskin's tweet which was an interpretation of Spike's point so who knows really.

I think mtcal is saying it doesn't matter if Popovich is the coach they aren't winning a title with the roster constructed as is, which is a reflection on Brand or whatever committee was in charge.

I mean, I agree that the organization's issues are at the very top (ownership makes decisions poorly).

At the same time, I think we have a lot of talent on the roster, a big coaching upgrade from last year, and a GM who's a smart guy and will probably have improved from last year (including taking the wheel and dropping the collaborative structure).

I get that the roster doesn't fit and the front office that got us into this mess in the first place is still in place. I think more defined roles/better coaching will help the roster and I think the front office is in better shape (due to the above) than last year. It's a new day and it's time to be excited.

i didn't have a point one way or the other

https://www.radio.com/94wip/sports/76-e ... KMVsw45L78

When the Philadelphia 76ers hired Doc Rivers this past weekend, the general consensus among Sixers fans was, and still is, — good hire.

Rivers, 58, has a championship pedigree and — at least on the surface — should be able to help grow the respective games of Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons.

But 94WIP Program Director and Rights To Ricky Sanchez Podcast host Spike Eskin, who admits he likes Rivers as a coach, doesn't believe he'll have as big of an impact on the franchise's growth as people think.

Eskin believes the bigger problem, especially when it pertains to that magic word accountability, goes above Rivers and into the front-office and ownership.

Eskin debated the impact Rivers will have on the Sixers on Wednesday's 94WIP Morning Show with former Sixers GM Billy King, who believes Rivers will help significantly.

"It's fine. It doesn't address the real problem," Eskin said when asked about the Sixers' decision to hire Rivers. "He's fine, he's a good coach, a good guy. Everybody thinking that Doc Rivers is some accountability master or point guard whisperer is wrong.

"Accountability in a basketball organization, or any organization, starts at the top. And the Sixers have exhibited the exact opposite of accountability with the organization. The people that have made all of these mistakes, that put them in the situation that they're in, are still here — above Doc Rivers."

King responded.

"But I think the one thing you have now in Doc Rivers is the first person here that has the credibility to tell all of those other people, that think they know more about basketball, to say, 'Look here, I've been around here.,'" King said. "And I think those people you're talking about now will listen to Doc more than they would listen to Brett Brown."

In an incredible turn of events, Spike's father Howard Eskin actually agreed with Spike — we think — for the first time ever.

I just heard a first! My son @SpikeEskin on @SportsRadioWIP was right about #Sixers. Just killed @bkdefend Billy King in a debate on hiring Doc Rivers with a still in place dysfunctional front office. @WIPMorningShow .
