The 27-year-old blueliner has three more years on his deal at a $4.5 million cap hit, although the cash payout is $3.25 million per season from here on out because it was a front-loaded deal. That might be appealing to some teams.
He screams change of scenery, that’s for sure. And it appears he may get one.
Nothing surprising tbh

Yea, I think previously the Flyers valued him more than the offers (if any) they received. There was always the hope he'd be able to click and maintain his highest level of play. Unfortunately that appears to not be possible.

23. Philadelphia: Noel Gunler, RW, Lulea-SHL
Charlie O’Connor: Philadelphia scouts Sweden extensively, so they’ll have more than enough first-hand information to make an informed decision as to whether the right move is to take a big swing on the polarizing Gunler. In theory, he could fill the glaring organizational need of a sniper on the wing, and considering the fact that he already is keeping his head above water in the SHL, he brings the added benefit of a potentially shorter path to the NHL for a Flyers club beginning to transition into “win-now” mode. There are defensive concerns surrounding Gunler, and an organization that tends to prefer to draft more “two-way” type forwards (as the Flyers do) will surely take them very seriously. But considering Philadelphia’s still-impressive prospect depth, they can afford to make a higher-risk pick for the plausible reward of adding a future top-six winger who fills their biggest stylistic need, way down at No. 23.

Gunler played all season up in the SHL, getting limited minutes for one of the top teams in that league. He excited folks when he scored 27 goals in 31 junior games last season. Gunler is a high-end passer and shooter. He shows great vision and patience, holding pucks and finding teammates through seams. He shows good creativity on his entries with flashes of top-end skill. He has a very hard shot and projects as a legit mid-distance shooter. The combination of his shot and vision makes him a threat inside the offensive zone and on the power play. Off the puck, his game is just OK. He is a physical player who regularly throws his weight around and can win battles versus men, however, scouts criticize his compete level and discipline at times. Gunler’s skating is average as well. His stride looks good but lacks any real power.
Tomas Monten, coach of Sweden’s U20 team, on Gunler: “This year he matured a lot. He plays like a pro. He can put pucks in the net and he can make plays, he has great hockey sense.”
12. When it comes to Patrik Laine, it sounds like he and the Jets are trying to solve an issue before it really becomes a problem. Winnipeg has term with Kyle Connor, Nikolaj Ehlers, Mark Scheifele and Blake Wheeler. That’s what they like and it’s why I think an Ehlers trade, as has been rumoured, is not Winnipeg’s want. Laine’s next negotiation will be massive. In the meantime, the winger wants guarantees of playing with Scheifele, which the Jets aren’t so willing to give. My sense is the Jets are saying, “Let’s try and do this now before we have to negotiate again.”
There’s a legit chance it happens. Columbus, hoping to make a major move, is in there, but is there a match? Same with Carolina. Two teams that could do it: Los Angeles and Philadelphia. I’m just not sure they would. I also wonder about the Islanders. It’s the kind of stealth move Lou Lamoriello would love. But they’ve got cap issues and it’s not like he’d give us a hint.

Let’s update this: Matt Niskanen has informed PHI that he will retire. Team asked him to take some time and think about it, he did and stayed with that decision. The Flyers are working on re-signing Justin Braun, do not want to lose two critical members of the PK
