How would I know? He is said to have had a hand in Hinkie's demise, which affected things, but beyond that I object to him having any on-court say.

By framing fan expectations. He should have told us this was gonna suck. Tired of his lip service, who does he think he is, Dave Spadaro?

IIRC didn't Hinkie want Porzingis but his hand was sort of forced by the combination of pressure from ownership (so maybe O'Neil) and Porzingis refusing to work out for the Sixers? I believe that was in Weitzman's book.

Didn’t he complain that they traded MCW after he won ROY and they were trying to market him when selling tickets? I wonder if his whining helped kill a potential Okafor trade.

porzingis was looked as a project. there was outrage from the national media and from the league about the sixers continuing to apparently blatantly tank. pretty sure o'neill was the middle man between the league and the team. hinkie i'm assured was told to draft the player who could immediately contribute and put wins on the board.

Ah yep that was in the book too. I think that trade literally happened like a day before some big marketing campaign that featured MCW in it was set to launch or something.

There's also the rumor that the following trade deadline the Celtics offered the pick that became Jaylen Brown for Okafor but O'Neill was part of a group in management/ownership that blew that up.

There's also the rumor (that was brought up again in a Murphy article last week) that someone in ownership decided to do the Bridges for Zhaire/Miami pick trade.

There's also the matter of who wanted Jimmy versus Tobias versus Horford.

It's all just a mess. It just speaks to a franchise being pulled in a lot of different directions.

Porzingis and his agent wanted no part of Philly. From what I remember in the book, Hinkie was developing an awful relationship around the league and in agent circles because of the way he was approaching contracts/negotations. It's sort of glossed over a lot but that's why I think eventually he would've been cooked, the Zingis situation was probably the start of a trend that would've been damaging for the org

Elton is speaking with the media now:

Brand on whether Scott O’Neill will be involved in the coaching search. “To be clear and frank, we feel the collaboration days didn’t work too well. I will be leading this search.”

Elton Brand: "I'm not looking to trade Ben or Joel. I'm looking to complement them better."

Elton is always very forthright. I'm glad that at least someone is willing to lead, whether that lead takes us to heaven or hell

@KyleNeubeck
Second time on the call Brand has mentioned getting “more basketball minds in here”

If they actually hire Doug Collins or something I'm going to lose it.

i was happy with the elton hire for all the assets he brings and he brings a lot of them. i didn't think he was ready, but with the sixers front office, i figured he would eventually grow into it as many of the others would inevitably move on. just wish it wasn't happening so soon. apparently he's putting on the big boy pants. gotta agree with you on this napalm.

I agree. I’ve always been a big EB fan, both as a player and person. I’m happy to give him a real shot at this.
