The top-end of the 2020 catchers in AAV is Molina at $20M, so Realmuto is going to get more than $20M a year. Would you do 5 years at say $105M?

I would. I don't think JT would.

I could stomach 5/125, but 5/130 would be higher AAV than Harper and he's two years older (I am in agreement we should resign him). Obviously we traded a cheap, controable asset to get him and we need to recoup some ROI.

Putting aside trading Sixto for Realmuto, the Phillies knew they won't be getting him on the cheap and I think it's a bit shortsighted to think 60 games would drive his overall price up.

Wonder how much of a per year discount you might get by adding guaranteed years. I'd only do that if the DH is permanent.

The fact that there was even a possibility that the final out at the plate might have been overturned is what makes me hate what they’ve done to the game.

We split with the Red Sox , lost a doubleheader to the Jays and took one of three from the Braves. That doesn't sound so terrible, but having five in a row in the middle was a big gut punch.

Actually, the way we lost moved the punch lower down.

Yeah 2-5 is really fucking bad no matter how you slice it, that’s like 46-116 over a full season. And the Red Sox somehow suck worse than we do and the Jays aren’t good.

They had a lead in all of those games.

Losing 5 games in a row is pretty deadly in a 60 game season... Hopefully, Workman can get better closing now since Neris is unreliable... some mix of Neris, Hembree, Hunter, Morgan, Alvarez, and hopefully Robertson and Ranger can hopefully calm things down a little... Arrieta needs to get it together behind Nola and Wheeler and Eflin has been OK... hopefully Howard keeps getting better... offense should be fine... maybe we can get it together to sneak in...

Going Arrieta, Nola, Howard for the Nats series, keeping Nola on his regular schedule and giving Wheeler an extra days rest, guessing this also means VV is in the pen for the next week+

But if the Philadelphia Phillies run into a buzz saw this week against Washington and Atlanta ... could they consider dealing catcher J.T. Realmuto?

Heresy, fans in Philadelphia would cry, and with good reason. Realmuto is the best catcher in baseball. He is also a pending free agent, and if the 10-14 Phillies get walloped this week and find themselves behind everyone in the NL except Pittsburgh, knowing six of the eight playoff spots in each league come from the top two teams in every division, could they make the calculation that the return from a Realmuto trade would outweigh the chances of a turnaround plus the draft pick they would reap if he were to leave in free agency?

Well, yeah. They could. Think about the teams that need catching help: Tampa Bay (with the best farm system in baseball), San Diego (second best), Cleveland (lots of good pitching) and others. But the idea of folding up shop, even if they struggle this week, is not just antithetical to their stated plan of contention in 2020. It would enrage fans who want to shout "Sign J.T.!" at their television and devices and want nothing more than a Realmuto extension. While fan sentiment cannot drive decision-making, anyone who says it doesn't factor in is lying.

It also would be quite the about-face. Philadelphia just traded for relievers Brandon Workman and Heath Hembree. Bryce Harper hasn't looked this good since his 2015 MVP season. Rookie Alec Bohm looks like a star. Aaron Nola and Zack Wheeler are an awfully good 1-2 punch atop the rotation. And the NL East ... leaves a lot to be desired.

If the Phillies sold, they'd have plenty of inventory: Realmuto, Workman, shortstop Didi Gregorius, outfielder Jay Bruce, starter Jake Arrieta. But to go from trying to win to full-on sale in less than a week? No team wants to do that, and it's what makes this deadline so confusing.

Worth considering but again don't get how Klentak would be the one that's allowed to make this trade

Could trade Realmuto and then sign him. Makes it less likely, sure, but it can be done.

I wouldn't do it just for the sake of doing it, but at the same time, if Tampa or SD came looking for a package deal, Id certainly consider it.

Worked out pretty good for us back in 2010 when we signed the best first baseman in baseball who had yet to show decline.

So similar, right? One was basically a loyalty deal. I love Howard but he was already in decline to begin with. Realmuto is athletic enough to play multiple positions and still beat the hell out of the ball. Howard. He was a plant at first base.

Good comp.

Realmuto would laugh at that, as he should.
