2019-20 Phillies Offseason 2:Filling holes & swapping roles

if phils get and pay to keep bryant, they will have trouble paying for a decent rotation if howard isn't available to step into arrieta's spot in 2021.
if the cubs are as obsessed about getting under the cap as the phillies, i can see them accepting bohm+segura+edls/jojo+medina. for the phils to get under the cap they would then need to find someone (maybe the chisox?) to pay half of arrieta's salary. i'm ok with this because i think howard can be as productive as the fading arrieta even this year, and that kingery will have at least as much value if the former finally gets to play full-time at 2b.

I've lost count of how many loose relievers the team has gobbled up on ST deals, but it feels like Clearwater should be a rather packed place.

Joe Giglio keeps doing this bit where he tweets, writes articles (I imagine yells on the radio idk don't listen) where he's demanding Klentak to go get Bryant while also saying that Howard can't be in the trade...
Two days later I get a text back that says I'm a basketball player and a businessman, not a Thundercat.

I’d also love to get Bryant for 40 cents on the dollar. CMON KLENTAK

I really believe both Howard and Bohm is an overpay. One will (almost) certainly need to be included.

Same. While I'd obviously love to have Bryant, it'd be really difficult to give both Howard and Bohm up except in the very unlikely event you'd have an extension with Bryant already agreed to. Doesn't seem wise long-term for the Phillies to part with both of them for just two years of Bryant. Some teams might be able to eat that kind of prospect cost, but the Phillies aren't one of them.

On the one hand, we can’t afford to empty our farm because we don’t have enough high end talent in the pipeline.

On the other hand, our prospects don’t really pan out so what’s the point of acting like we can’t afford to part with our prospects (who probably won’t amount to much) for a high end player?

Real catch 22 here.

I think Bohm is legit. Whether he's at 3B or LF dude is going to hit.

This seems like a sentiment that isn’t going to age well.

Go with the sure thing.

Both Bohm and Bryant were drafted at age 21.

2 years later, we hope Bohm is nearly ready. He's a top-35 prospect. He's put up an .845 OPS across 5 teams already.
2 years later, Bryant was ready (hence the grievance), and was #1 BA prospect, #2 MLB prospect. He had an OPS of nearly 1.100 across 5 teams.

Bryant won ROY and was 11th in MVP voting his first year, then won the MVP. In the 5 years he's been up, he's got the 3rd most fWAR in baseball, behind Trout and Betts, just ahead of Yelich, Lindor, Altuve, and Arenado. He's a legit star.

I like Bohm. I think he'll be a good player, maybe even very good. I hope he's outstanding. But we don't have a long history of guys who outperform their expectations - we may be the worst organization in baseball at turning prospects into stars over the last 20 years. And even if he somehow hit as well in the majors as he did in the minors, he'd still be worst than Bryant.

Make the deal, sign Bryant to a post-2021 extension. Arrieta's $20M comes off this year. Gregorius is on a 1 year deal for $14M. Robertson's $11M comes off next year. McCutchen is $20M in 2021, then a team option.. we have a ton of money freeing up.
