i think the slow decline and fall of the 2007-2011 phillies dynasty literally climaxing in roy halladays death almost completely killed my interest in the phillies and it makes me so sad. i loved that team so much and would watch every game. hell even the rebuilding teams had a little character in an funny esoteric way.

i hope the sixers don't end up the same way.

really there's not interest with harper Kingery Hoskins and Realmuto? i still love watching them all bat and hope rhys can turn it around, and isn't jt arguably the best all around catcher in baseball?

oh for sure there are exciting players on the team. my disinterest entirely lies within myself not the team. tmac doesn't help either. next season i'll try and pay more attention, i hope we get good pitchers.

No surprise at all.

@JonHeyman
Jake Arrieta will not exercise his opt out in Phillies deal. Not a surprise; he’s coming off injury year and elbow surgery (though he should be fine for spring training). Arrieta could have opted out of the final year of his $75M, 3 year deal and left $20M 2020 salary on table.

Side note, how are people feeling about the Win Probability Added stat these days? Because it doesn't seem enough if being made about Harper finishing 7th in MLB (behind Yelich, Trout, Bellinger, Rendon, Olson, and Muncy).

Olson?
(Brandy) only hinted at Halladay's personal issues during her Hall of Fame speech last July, when she said, "Roy would want everyone to know that people are not perfect. We're all imperfect and flawed in one way or another. We all struggle."

Realmuto is a shoo-in right? Dunno about Nola, but I guess Bryce could get it based on name recognition and perceived improvement from last year?

I wouldn't say that JT is necessarily a shoo-in, as long as Yadi has a pulse. But yeah, he should be.

so, after g.cole and a.rendon, what is the best way to rank the rest of this fa class as targets for the phils?
our primary needs are for sp's and 3b.
for sp, the guys in the next tier (with the average of their 2019 fwar and bwar) behind cole (7.15 average war) are:
ryu (4.95)
wheeler (4.10)
odorizzi (3.95)
madbum (2.85)

the infield fa's nearest to rendon (6.65) are:
donaldson (5.5)
moustakas (3.0)
plus didi gregorius coming off an injury-shortened season.

and, of course, there are a couple of interesting outfielders available in the form of ozuna (2.4) and castellanos (2.15)

my ranking would then be odorizzi (i like the k-rate), wheeler, donaldson, gregorius (should be relatively cheap, and young enough to rebound, arm more likely to play at 3b than segura or kingery or cesar), moustakas, ryu, madbum, ozuna, castellanos (but only for 1b if we trade hoskins)
BRING HOME THE GOAT!

After the top 2 I have questions about all of them. I'd rank the rest based more on the contract they'll agree to.

Ryu is probably the next best option but he's looking to get paid like an ace.

I'd probably go with Wheeler and Donaldson as my second choices but haven't really dug into numbers yet.

I think we may be disappointed in what the Phillies actually do in free agency.
Drunk and stupid is no way to be remembered but it is an easy way to forget.

Pitching wise, I like to have input from the pitching coach, especially the lower tier guys. These are the guys that have a good idea who they can maybe turn around or resurrect with an added pitch, grip or a slight change in mechanics.

I’d stay away from him. When he’s healthy, he’s very good but he seems to break down every season.

I’m a fan of Odorizzi but he’s more like a good 5-6 inning pitcher. A little fly ball prone and not the cleanest health record but pretty talented. Would love him and wheeler assuming we won’t get Cole.
