2019-20 Phillies Offseason: Striving for Better Than Average

They have to be sure they get their guy ... no reason to fire Kapler then hire your 4th or 5th choice... wonder if Girardi to the Cubs is a done deal... I'd rather him than Showalter

Kinda crazy that the presumed first choice to move on from Gabe is the manager we beat on ‘08 and the second is the one that beat us in ‘09

I don't get where Middleton is becoming "Meddleton". He saw a team that underperformed expectations at the plate and on the mound after spending some serious cash to not have that happen. He intervened and had both the hitting and pitching coaches fired. If that's meddling, good for that. If the owner of a recently acquired corporation had two sectors of it that were seriously underperforming after investing heavily in them, they'd be remiss if they didn't check into that and probably roll some heads. Middleton is doing the same thing with the Phillies. That's not meddling; its sound management.

But why overstep MacPhail and Klentak if you're keeping them?

Your’s is a point well taken and mystifies me. I guess that it’s why people think that if Kapler is fired, then all three should go. Actually I think that Klentak has done a good job of acquiring quality position players at a reasonable price, so I’d give him a pass for next year. MacPhail’s job seems to be like that of a consultant more than an active participant in the team’s operations. It is possible that Middleton discussed his concerns with MacPhail regarding Mallee and getting Manuel into the mix was a joint decision. Who knows? We’ll have to wait and see how things work out over the next week before jumping to any conclusions.
As for interviewing the players regarding the status of the manager goes, I’m not a fan of that. There will be ten guys that love the manager (the ones that have the PT that they think that they deserve); ten guys that hate him (the ones that aren’t getting the PT that they think that they deserve) and five that don’t give a rip (because they aren’t going to be here next season).

I doubt he's asking Nick Williams what he thinks of Kapler. He's probably just asking the key guys.

He'd be well advised to talk to the players who failed along with those who succeeded.

It will be pretty funny if there is no announcement at all and Kapler just is out there managing in March

Steaks wrote Monday that an announcement would come no later than today. This would keep a string going of things he's been wrong about if there isn't an announcement.

Btw, it would particularly tone deaf for Middleton to fire Kapler on Yom Kippur.

Well, the Andrew Miller joke was beat to death on this board.

Side note. The Phillies (Middleton) has made his decision. An announcement should be coming shortly..

@Rolex, the Meddleton thing is just a sport radio trope rolled out for general snark.

They should pull a Sixers "Gabe Kapler's employment status will be re-evaluated in 2-3 weeks."

Salisbury update:

Noontime passed on Wednesday and still there was no verdict on Gabe Kapler. Maybe the Phillies will say something about the future of their manager on Thursday or Friday.

It is difficult to envision the team saying anything the remainder of Wednesday because two decisive Division Series games will be played later in the day. The Cardinals and Braves play at 5 p.m., and the Dodgers and Nationals at 8:30. Major League Baseball frowns on teams making major announcements during its signature October events and the games are about to get even bigger with the National League Championship Series starting on Friday night and the American League Championship Series commencing on Saturday.

So if you’re looking for a window for an announcement on whether Kapler is staying or going, it could be Thursday or Friday — early in the day before the focus turns to the action on the field.
