He should be a good 2C for the team but this is a slight overpay for being able to talk to him over the past few weeks.

This is an awful contract. 7 years!? Jesus.
On a scale of 1 to Chris Brown, how pissed is he?

One of the top young UFA centers this offseason along with Duchene and Lee, so it's probably the going rate

was pretty good under av in ny. that contract is just the cost of doing business these days.

I saw something that said he was about the 40th best center in the league last year.

He did only play 71 games so that may have impacted his ranking.

Yep. Guys, the Flyers are better and we still have awesome prospects coming. And some goalie named Hart.

He’s only 27. I’ve seen this franchise give far worse contracts. I’m cool with it. We are better right now than we have been at any point in the last five years

Well the flyers have a big need at center?

Well at some point Patrick should be a top 6 guy.

I just feel like I'd rather give a better player $9 or 10 million per than give a 50-point center $7 million per. I feel like these moves where the Flyers give second line players first line money are going to start adding up and we're going to be sitting here in like two years why the Flyers have maxed out as a lower-tier playoff team with no cap space and no flexibility.

When Patrick and Frost show that they can handle the middle ice, Hayes easily moves to a wing. Seven bills a year is a lot of money but that’s the new normal in the market place.

The issue is there's no one to give that 9/10m to. Duchene was the only one available and there was no indication he was coming here. They needed a 2C badly and Hayes is a perfect fit. It was predicted he would get 7/46.9 so not a huge overpay. We have a really solid team now around Carter Hart.

I don't follow the Flyers closely enough. I presume that Hayes now causes the demotion of Nolan Patrick to the 3rd Line?

Yes Patrick will be the 3C this season.

Saw this on Reddit for a Salary breakdown.

TL;DRs:
The Flyers have roughly $4M - $5M in cap with a winger and back up goalie to sign. I think this excludes them from the UFA winger market barring a trade since I would expect that, assuming the salary projections are correct, half of the remaining cap space will be spent on a goalie backup. At this point, I would also expect two forwards on cheap RFA or ELC deals to make the team to fill things out. One in reserve and one on the 3rd or 4thline.

If the remaining RFAs of consequence (meaning those expected to sign above the AHL bury threshold) sign for more than projected, that may necessitate a trade. There is not a lot of wiggle room here and with the number of RFAs remaining to sign there is a high degree of uncertainty in the final cap situation.

If Fletcher makes a move to bring in additional salary we will likely see a trade.

This is Fletcher's team now The bets Fletcher has placed, especially on Niskanen and Braun return to their previous form, are sizable. If they hold steady or fall off further this team may not meet expectations simply due to the lack of wiggle room to make changes.

Meltzer: Last season, the Flyers entered with Jori Lehterä ($4.7M) and Dale Weise ($2.35M) combining for $7.05M of cap space. That money was essentially reallocated to Kevin Hayes ($7.14M) this offseason, on a 7-year term.

Interesting way to look at it. Actual productive player in his prime for the same price as these two turds
