REPORT SO FAR:
Went to Wrigley last night. Looking to go to Guaranteed Rate Field on Tuesday. I'd call "Guaranteed Rate Field" Comiskey, only arguably the only thing worse than naming a ballpark after some dumb corporation is naming it after one Charles A. Comiskey.
Wrigley is very cool, nicer than Fenway I'd say. I sat in the left field bleachers, which to me are the iconic part of the stadium. Stupidly I forgot to take a photo of the view over my left shoulder, of a regular old residential street. Truly a neighborhood ballpark. To the extent that it hasn't been ruined by the Tribune Company and the Ricketts family over the years.
I have this quality where random strangers like to engage me in conversation, particularly at baseball stadiums. Happens wherever I go. Last night was no different. Met an old codger named Bart, who told me he was a season ticket holder for 40 years, all out in the bleachers. Used to attend every Cubs game at home. It was nice to have someone to chat with who could explain some of the changes over the years, etc.
Last night’s game got delayed because of rain and lightning, and it was cold and there was no end in sight, so I decided it was time for me to go. This dude said he'd walk me to the train, which he did. Once on the train, he told me he had never, ever left a Cubs game early in all that time. This made me sad. On the other hand, he told me had moved from Illinois two years earlier, and his wife, who used to come with him to all Cubs games, was no longer interested in traveling. Obviously he was hoping to have someone to watch the game with, and I guess I gave him that, even though it made him leave early for the first time ever.
All in all, a good night.
