2018-19 Flyers Season I: GRITTY and SHITTY This Year

Every organization has a DNA and Clarke, Holmgren and the like are part of it. They are a hard nosed competitive bunch and that's what the fans want to see. I get it that they've only won two SCs but they've been in the finals several times and have come up empty. Tough to beat the Potvin Islanders, the Gretzky Oilers, The Red Machine in Detroit and so forth. At least they got there and played exciting hockey. This bunch that has been out on the ice over the last four seasons just did not compete. Philly fans won't put up with that.

Clarke has nothing to do with anything and hasn't for years. He has a lifetime contract that pays him $250K a year. Unless something changed recently he has zero responsibilities.

I wasn't really trying to imply that Holmgren and Clarke were still pulling strings behind the scenes, just that the sum of the tenures of them and Hextall has been 24 years.

McGuire says Hextall wanted rebuild to be done properly, not to deviate from it, Holmgren wanted to bring up Hart now & speed up the rebuild, they have not been selling out, #Flyers losing millions in revenue. Hextall didn't want to do that. That's yr "philosophical differences."

I mean if there is one thing to doubt Hextall on it’s definitely goalies.

I'd also understand if Hart was tearing it up in the AHL.

McGuire knows nothing about the Flyers. The Penguins, yes, but not here.

This smells like BS.

It sounds like Hextall was a control-freak tyrant who alienated everyone in the organization. I can tell you people who work for the Flyers who you would never think would have any contact with the GM are ecstatic he's gone due to him directly affecting them personally. Not sure you could find one person down there who would say a nice word about him and how he ran the entire organization at this point.

There are also thousands of empty seats in the building every night. The attendance numbers are rigged due to the affiliation with ticket brokers, but there have been nights this year where there were probably only 12-13,000 people in the building. Hextall completely killed all interest in the franchise. He deserved to be fired in spectacular fashion.

Also, there's a general thought that Hakstol couldn't coach the team the way he wanted because Hextall micro-managed him to the point he was actually doing everything other than running the games............telling him the lineup to dress, the system to play, who to play in goal, etc. I have always hated Hakstol and think he sucks, but the general consensus seems to be he was getting a really raw deal. Completely FWIW.

Sorry to see him go. Flyers have been the most interesting team to watch in Philly for the last couple years ( I mean, I'm a Phillies fan first, but it's harder to sniff out the direction of the team). Tons of players I could root for, exciting style of play, and a bright future if they could ever get a goalie healthy for more than a month. Would have liked to see more of this, but pretty sure they're going in a different direction.

I’m not sure how involved he was in all that went down this morning, but I believe Bob Clarke played a role at some level. He was around the #Flyers facility quite a bit today and had been more visible in the past week. I’m also told he met with Dave Hakstol yesterday.

Broad Street Hockey: Holmgren refuses to answer questions about what moves a new GM might make explicitly, but the implication is clear: he wants prospects moved for NHL talent that improves this team now.
