And just because a team picks a guy off the board doesn't make them smarter than everyone else.

Right, but I would say you have to give a team like the Flyers the benefit of the doubt, at least when it comes to the first round. With O'brien someone tweeted that the Rangers and two other teams really wanted him so just because he was 60+ on some analysts boards doesn't mean it is a bad pick at 19. I already see the dumb NBC Sports story asking if the Flyers took too big of a gamble on O'Brien.

If he was ranked in the 20's nobody would say anything. At least the article seems like they are giving Hextall the benefit of the doubt with his draft history.

many of these scouting sites focus on players who were considered to be hot going into their draft years. These are the ones that get picked for the U-18 squads. O’Brien was too old for the U-18 teams but too young for last year’s draft so he was caught in limbo. The best that he could do was play at Thayer Academy against U.S. high school competition. He did that and put up ridiculous numbers making him the H.S. Player of the year. Guys like him fall through the cracks on scouting services
