He led with his knees because he didnt slide in time, for the express purpose of increasing the force of impact. Additionally, he pivoted with his second to last step to shift toward Hedges, and away from the plate. Take a look here at 20 seconds in:
Here's Rizzo's misinterpretation of the rule, which tells us all we need to know about his intent to hit the catcher instead of sliding into the open plate:
