Perhaps, but in 1971, the year after the collision, Fosse was once again an all star catcher and a gold glove winner. 1970 was the only time he posted an OPS+ above 100, except for 1976, when he once again hit over .300. Those 16 home runs in the first half of the 1970 were more than he hit in over 1200 minor league plate appearances.
Sure, one can say that that half season was a marker of his true potential and he would have gone on to be a star if not for the collision. That's certainly the story Fosse has been telling at regular intervals, and why not?
I tend to think his career would have taken a very similar shape to what it did anyway, and think there's more evidence that that's the case.
And I hate Rose.

To his credit, he never blamed Rose for a cheap play but it was what it was. Everyone knew that Rose had gone over the top with that play. The AS game was an exhibition game.

This is insanely insulting to Johnny Bench who hit 22 HR in 350 AB as an 18 year old in the minors. The two aren't and would never have been on the same planet with or without the collision.
