Interesting. Foles currently has some bizarre contract where it voids after next year but only if he is on the Eagles roster. Thus for trading purposes he is under contract for like 3 more years I think. In any event, I want him to get what he wants.

Would Foles be both the first back up on Madden's "cover", and the first to be playing for a different team then he is pictured in uniform for the game.

No to number two. Favre was on the cover of Madden as a Packer and then signed with the Jets. They offered replacement covers with him in a jets uniform and stuff. It was pretty strange.

Not Madden but Kyrie was on the cover of 2K this year. Also did a replacement cover post trade.

Perhaps Carson Wentz/Nick Foles can become a modern version of Bart Starr/Zeke Bratkowski or John Unitas/Earl Morrall.

I’ve thought of Morrall a number of times. Didn’t he do it as a backup to Griese, too?

Well, that was a scam, right. He was a pretty average pro football player who became the subject of a fan vote scheme. The Boaty McBoatface of Madden. Foles has actual credentials.

Can't imagine a better use of that money than knowing for a fact we're championship-caliber at QB for two or three years

Foles probably gets 100 million in the open market, not sure a 27 million with 16 guaranteed is anywhere near a contract they could sign him to.

That and the "it starts at two first round picks" type of talk still feels really high to me. But it only takes one team, I guess.

I agree. In a world where Jimmy Garoppolo got 5/137.5 after 7 starts, Foles is worth more than 3/27 and he would be worth more than that next offseason as a FA.

He wants to join the ministry after his career ends. Imagine how much more good work he could do with an additional $100 million in his pocket? He may not need the money personally, but I doubt that's his only consideration.

Well yeah, he probably wants to start again too so thinking he would take so much less money AND backup is pretty silly imo.

How do trades work in the NFL? I would think Foles as a trading chip would be far more valuable if he's under contract for 5 years or so. Otherwise, he's just a one year rental. Does Foles have much leverage here about where he ends up? That is could the Eagles extend him, and then send him off to Cleveland? Is there an NFL equivalent of a limited no trade clause? Or do the Eagles try to work out a deal with Foles and a 3rd party--say Arizona, where Foles agrees to a 9 figure contract from AZ, and AZ sends Philly draft picks or whatever?

What really makes no sense if for the Eagles to keep Foles as a back up for a year and then let him walk. But teams aren't likely to give Philly much for 1 year of Foles. (I guess that's his leverage--Philly could try to send him to Cleveland, and Foles could simply refuse to sign with them. And if Foles really is as rich as you all say, he can just quit football altogether if Philly doesn't do right by him.

Something like this makes sense. Interesting that you mention AZ. Fitzgerald agreed to play on yesterday. I doubt that he would have agreed to comeback unless AZ had a decent QB to throw to him. Foles? Decent trade-AZ flips #1s with the Eagles along with a #2 for NF?

Yes you can have a no trade clause in a contract. Aren't you just talking about the Alex Smith type thing that just happened? Skins trade for Smith and extend him in the deal to make it happen.

The problem in signing Foles to an extension in that scenario is the potential bonus/guaranteed $. It doesn't make sense for the Eagles to sign him, give him a bonus and then trade him in most scenarios, because they would have to eat that bonus as a cap hit. What makes more sense is to allow a prospective team to talk with Foles about an extension prior to the trade and then make the trade once the handshake deal between Foles/Team is agreed upon.

Assuming it’s legal and Foles is ok with it (who knows?) I think the ideal thing might be to extend him at a solid amount for a backup, with lots of incentives if he ends up starting a lot of games along with an opt out clause at some point if he gets tired of not playing.

If I'm Foles, I'm thinking the SB win jumpstarts my career and maybe a new start with another team as a starter can benefit me financially. The guy should make big money now, I wouldn't waste this opportunity.
