I will preface this by saying that football is very different from baseball, in that the QB in football has more direct influence on the overall quality of the team than any player on a baseball team has.
Having said that, we know it's a principle of baseball, and players themselves occasionally get reminded of as much by their front offices, that nobody is really untouchable in the right deal and teams have discussions all the time about people they are unlikely to trade. Would I give up Rhys Hoskins or Aaron Nola or Sixto Sanchez? Not for all the tea in China. But if somebody has a mind to offer all the tea in China, you listen.
Now, I know football is different - the whole point of having those big time high draft picks is to find Carson Wentz - and we found him. I wouldn't even listen to an offer for Wentz - UNLESS Foles goes out and tears it up in the Super Bowl and the Eagles beat Brady, Belichick, and the big bad Patriots.
If that happens, well, what more can any QB do? Nobody can outdo that, which tells you the Eagles as constituted can and probably would be competitive - not as good, but competitive, with Foles at the helm. Meanwhile, the Eagles have, for my mind, THE most valuable asset in the NFL. Admittedly, getting a "valuation" of an asset is the first step towards selling that asset, and basically I think it is a bad idea to trade Wentz - but if Cleveland wanted to blow our doors off for him, wouldn't you at least want to know what the offer would be? I could imagine both 1sts this year, plus the 1st in 2019, and 2021, with a second in 2020 and a 3rd in 2022 as not outside the realm of possibility, or some similar package. If you got another team involved - I mean, seriously, what WOULDN'T the Jets or Vikings or some other long suffering franchise give for Wentz?
Don't really want to do, but if Foles beats the Patriots whole putting up a good or better performance, I kind of have the feeling of confidence to want to find out exactly what the most valuable player in the NFL is really worth.
