Jayson Werth; Unspeakable Reprobate

I drive pretty fast on the beltway, but there are some really windy sections. Impressed he got over 100 mph, to be honest. Pretty much the definition of reckless. (It's not like the PA turnpike, which contains long straight stretches with good site-lines.)

it was?

Reckless driving is more than a "speeding offense"

hmm.

it can be other things outside of speeding, but going 105 is "wanton disregard for the rules of the road"

The whole thing took .6 miles. He's in a Porsche, going from an onramp onto the highway.

He was going fast as fuck, but it probably lasted 20-25 seconds.

it doesn't deserve jail time. Not even 10 days. Suspending a license is a big deal. he can afford a driver, but it's a hassle.

Did he enter the highway from the onramp or was that just a mechanism to describe which stretch of highway where he was caught? I interpreted it to be the latter.

I feel like at 105 most people might as well be driving drunk, so I don't really have a problem with people being locked up for it.

If he was just going 110 mph that's absurd that he is going to jail. Even if he was weaving in and out of traffic like a dickbag he should be punished but not like that.

At that point it's like waving a dangerous weapon around in public, so i don't have a problem with it

I can't wave a weapon that fast, otherwise maybe I'd earn a $126MM contract.

How fast should it be before he goes to jail? Mach 1?

Surprised that he didn't have to stop for traffic before then.

It was at 9:30 a.m. on the Sunday following the Fourth of July. Not exactly rush hour, but definitely a touristy time of year. So there's no way he wasn't going around other cars to do it.

On the beltway, it is always rush hour.

9:30 on a Sunday morning isn't bad. You'll be able to go 60-70 without needing to weave much, but going over 100 would require a lot of maneuvering.

I don't know why you think it's a problem that someone does a week in jail for driving 100+ in a 55. It's not like it's a mistake, or that he didn't realize he was going that fast, or that there's any serious mitigating factors. He just didn't care about the safety of others. It's basically a sociopathic move. He could have easily killed someone for no reason whatsoever.

it's one of the more dangerous things a citizen can do to directly affect some unknowing bystander

This is so entirely blown out of proportion. "Don't ever speed in Virginia" =/= "don't do 93 (or 105) in a 55."

BTW, many southern states are similar to Virginia. I know a guy who did a weekend in jail in NC for doing 30 over on the way to the beach. And I have no problem with it. I have way too many cases that come across my desk where someone is now dead or a glorified vegetable because someone thought it'd be fun to do 75 in a 45. It takes a fraction of a second to completely destroy an entire family's life.

All it takes is 80 in a 55 which is not ridiculous at all on most 55 roads. It's clearly situation specific but these assholes sit at the border and get people going 80 in a 70 to 80 in a 55 in an instant and hit them with misdemeanors.
